Grass Valley became an agricultural center after the discovery of oil in 1916. The town's economy has depended on its proximity to water supplies and its location within easy driving distance of major metropolitan areas.
Grass Valley is a small town in the Inland Empire of Southern California. The population was 9,569 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Simi Hills Unified School District and has two campuses: Grass Valley High School which serves students in grades 9-12, and Grass Valley Elementary School which serves students in kindergarten through 5th grade. The town is located about an hour northwest of Los Angeles. The first Europeans to visit Grass Valley were Jesuit missionaries on October 15, 1846, when they set out from Isla Vista on a missiontrip to explore what lay between Santa Barbara County and San Bernardino County. After exploring for several days they return home with some plants that they named "Chrysanthemum" because it had snowed during their journey. On February 14, 1861, land was patented for $1,500 by Manuel Nieto to John Fitch as Rancho de las Nubes (GrassValley). The ranch included present day GrassValley proper as well as portions of today's North Hollywood and Beverly Hills neighborhoods including Canoga Park and Florence Heights. Fitch opened up the land to farming with orchards and vineyards being developed soon thereafter. In 1911 territorial authorities authorized the establishment ofUSD 1010 verified agricultural school within boundaries prescribed by Congress under section 6(a) of Public Law 606 (8 U.S.) 1st c., 111 Statutes at Large ch 210 (1911 ed.). This school operated until 1924 when it relocated to Glendale where it continues operation as Universal System Agricultural College today! In 1926 Pacific Gas & Electric Company purchased Rancho de las Nubes from John Fitch for $2 million making this one of the largest government purchases in history! At this time most rural communities such as those near Los Angeles were connected by electrified transportation so there was great anticipation for this new development! Later that year incorporation papers were filed with the United States Patent office listing James O'Brien who had previously been associated with General Electric Co., vice president thereof since 1915! On November 17th, 1928 James O'Brien becamegranted US patent 827563 covering a novel type of electric tramcar called an Electroliner- see accompanying drawing below p/n 2!!!!!!

However, due to its location near major transportation routes and its close proximity to goldfields throughout California, Grass Valley continued to be an important center for commerce and culture until the early 21st century.
