The USAF was founded on October 17,1917 as the Army Air Service. In 1935, it was renamed the USAAF following its merger with the RAF. Today, the USAF is one of the largest air forces in the world with over 145,000 active duty members and an additional 33,000 civilians who support its military operations. This act of heroism is evident in many ways; for example, many American pilots were killed or wounded in action while flying for their country. Consequently, America's first fighter force was built up primarily from veterans of this war effort. During World War II, many advances were made within aviation; these advancements include radar detection and guidance systems which allowed bombers to strike targets much more accurately than ever before. The name Greenfield is likely derived from the Spanish word "aguardiente," meaning "watchtower." The first settler in what became Greenfield was Elisha Smith who arrived in 1853 from Scotland. He named his new town after his father-in-law, President James K. Polk of America. Greenfeld later became a townsite and it has been claimed that there are more buildings now in Greenfeld than when it was founded as a town in 1853. Greenfield experienced a rapid growth during the late 19th century due to its location on the Kern River floodplain and its access to irrigation water supplies; this growth stopped around 1920 because of increased competition from other communities along the river valley and elsewhere on the West Coast. The first certificate was created on October 1st, 1941 and was called "The Golden Ribbon" certificate designating it as a special gift for active duty airmen and their families who had served in our Armed Forces during World War II*. Greenfield, California is located in the Central Valley of California. The population was 9,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of Fresno County. In 1853, William H. Greenfield started a tannery on his farm in present-day Greenfield. It was the first tannery in this area and it became a major industry until around 1925 when leather production replaced tanning as the mainstay of Greenfield's economy. The original town site was located east of where it stands today on what is now State Route 97 and United States Route 805 (the old alignment of SR 97). In 1855, Nathaniel Peed sold lots to settlers in what would become downtown Greenfield; Businessman Augustus John Eaton donated land for a school and community hall which were completed in 1857. The first post office opened in 1861, and by 1865 Greenfield had a population of about 100 people. Most notably, Avila Dam began construction on West Lakebed Road near present day Elmira on May 13th, 1928 and ended up producing 7% of all water used nationwide during that time period- an engineering feat at that time! The dam also produced large quantities of irrigation water for agriculture which helped maintain high yields through the 1930s into the 1940s when World War II caused dramatic declines in demand for agricultural produce around America. Ultimately though Avila Dam contributed to increased flooding along its length due to rains events that occurred frequently during those years- making it difficult to cultivate crops despite efforts to do so while avoiding flooding as much as possible
