Greenfield, California is a city in Stanislaus County, California, United States. The population was 831 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Modesto–San Joaquin Valley Metropolitan Statistical Area. The community was founded in 1887 by Danforth Green and his wife Hannah Stone as a small farmstead on what is now Greenfield Road. The name "Greenfield" first appeared on town plat maps in 1889. The communities of Albion and Indian Wells were established adjacent to Greenfield between 1910 and 1912; both villages lost their status when they combined to form Modesto. In 1932, the San Joaquin Valley Regional Water District (SVRW) acquired land east of Modesto City limits for water storage and distribution purposes; this area became known as West Valley Ranch. In 1937, SVRW completed construction of the first major dam in the valley—the Palo Alto Dam—which impounded an estimated . Over time, several smaller dams have been constructed around West Valley Ranch: , , and . The water from these reservoirs forms much of the drinking water for most of Stanislaus County and parts of Kern County. The original retail store in Red Bluff opened its doors on December 12, 1886 by Wm Henson & Bros., a grocery chain that had originated in Stockton two years earlier. By 1918, there were sixteen stores operating along Red Bluff Avenue (now Highway 16). A cheese factory built close to the original store burned down in 1922 but not before causing extensive damage to neighboring businesses including a post office, bank building and three general stores which are still extant today across from First Baptist Church off Red Bluff Avenue (now Highway 16). In 1925 Brown's Hardware Store was founded adjacent to First Baptist Church with 20 employees; it closed after twenty years due to lack of business competition from larger stores nearby such as Safeway and Kroger. By 1933 Brown's had evolved into one of America's largest hardware retailers with over 350 employees located throughout Northern California including locations at various airports worldwideá

Greenfield was first settled in 1853 by Isham and David Greenfield. Their heirs, the McDougalls, also arrived in 1853. The original Greenfield post office was established in 1854. The town was named for John Fenton, a surveyor who surveyed the area.
