Greenfield, California is a small town in Kern County, California. As of the 2010 census it had a population of 2,751. The name comes from the nearby hills that are green for cotton due to the annual growth of grasses and other plants. The community was founded in 1878 by pioneers who were looking for land to farm. It was originally called Cottonwood Springs but changed its name to Greenfield in honor of Greenfield, Massachusetts. The first post office in Greenfield was established on December 12, 1878. At its peak there were around twenty-five residents living in the community. The first school was built in 1886 and served grades K-8th. In 1907, the First National Bank opened up shop here and soon became one of the largest banks west of Denver. In 1912, Greenfield hosted its first rodeo which drew many people from throughout Kern County to watch horses compete at Lackland Park. Many businesses have been located here over time such as an sawmill (1915), grocery store (1918), printing press (1920), and tire store (1924). In 1990, when Kern County merged with Los Angeles County, Greenfield became part of new Los Angeles Unified School District No. 951; however much community activity still occurs within or outside of LAUSD boundaries including weekend farmers' markets as well as an annual arts festival which takes place on Memorial Day Weekend in downtown Greenfeld recognizing both local artisans and international artists who have visited during that month’s open house festivities

The 20th century was not kind to Greenfield; many of its residents left during World War II for military service. However, through hard work and determination, Greenfield eventually emerged from its postwar difficulties stronger than ever before.
