Greenfield, California is located in the Central Valley of California and has a population of over 20,000. The town was founded in 1887 by three brothers who were looking for a place to homestead. The town grew quickly because of its natural resources and its location on the Butterfield Overland Mail route. Greenfield became an important center for trade and commerce during the late 19th century. In 1907, Greenfield was named as one of the cities that would become part of Fresno after it was annexed by that city. The early years of Greenfield were difficult due to environmental problems caused by goldmining operations in nearby Nevada and New Mexico. However, with the advent of World War II, Greenfield bounced back and became an important industrial center thanks to itsArsenal Shipbuilding company which manufactured warships and other naval equipment. The company went bankrupt in the 1970s but reopened later that decade under new management. Today, Arsenal shipbuilding is one of the most significant employers in Greenfeldtown Village Historic District. Due to its central location within Fresno County, Greenfield also played a role in county politics throughout much of its history. For example, from 1911 until 1920, mayor John Ahern served as chairman for both the Board of Education and County Council; he also served as president pro Tem from 1912-1914 and then as speaker from 1915-1920. Another prominent figure who lived or worked in Greenfeldtown during these years was banker Jens Weidner who helped build up local businesses before moving away to become chief executive officer at American Express Company outside Sacramento when that company merged with Time Warner Incorporated in 1994). Today, Greenfeldtown Village Historic District is home to many notable buildings including Redwood Library (1893), Post Office (1897), Guggenheim Museum (1927), United States Courthouse (1937), Masonic Temple (1890), National Guard Armory (1973) and several churches including Our Lady Of Guadalupe Parish Church(1892) and Our Lady Of Lourdes Parish Church(1915).
Greenfield was founded by Captain John Green in 1845. The town was named after the natural resources that were available there, such as timber and water. The first post office opened in 1846. By 1865, Greenfield had a population of about 350 people. The town experienced economic prosperity during the late 19th century, thanks to its growing trade with nearby towns and cities. However, this prosperity eventually faded as production within the town decreased and transportation became more expensive. In 1922, Greenfield lost its status as an incorporated municipality and all vestige of its municipal government ended in 2002 when it merged with nearby Lompoc
