Greenfield, California is a town in San Bernardino County, California. The population was 12,801 at the 2010 census. It is located on the Riverside Signal Hill Peninsula. The town of Greenfield was founded by farmers in 1887 and became an agricultural center due to its high quality soil and plentiful water resources. In 1923, the town's first store opened and soon began to grow into a major commercial center around it. By 1930, Greenfield had also become home to one of the leading machine tool companies in Southern California. During World War II, Greenfield operated as a key transportation hub for munitions production in Orange County and served as a military housing community for local servicemen and their families during the war years. After hostilities ended in 1945, many businesses closed down or were abandoned as technology changed and new opportunities arose in post-war America. However, some of these older businesses such as The Machine Shop continued to operate until they closed down again around 2000 – until finally being reborn again as a local seafood restaurant chain about 10 years ago! Today, Greenfield remains an agricultural center with support from nearby citrus groves that provide much needed employment for local farmers; however there are also now several professional offices located within walking distance of the downtown core including law firms (including one which relocated from Irvine), accounting firms (one relocated from LOS Angeles), biotech startups (including two that have chosen to anchor their office space inside of what used to be an old farmhouse) along with numerous small businesses catering to day-to-day needs like caterers/diners/brewers etc., making it one of most vibrant communities in southern California!

The first people to live in Greenfield were the Hahns and their families who arrived from northern California in 1852. There was no permanent settlement until after greenfields discovery by prospectors on July 12, 1870 when George A. Hearn and his party discovered an area that would later be known as Greenfield. The early residents of Greenfield were farmers with some cattle and hogs grazing on their land; however, by 1880 there were over 100 businesses operating in the town. By 1907, most of the farms had been abandoned and many of the buildings had been destroyed or replaced by factories or other businesses. In 1912, local postmaster John Ewing put together a group to purchase land east of town for what would become American Legion Post No 307 which remains today one of the largest post office buildings west of Mexico City.. In 1916, Harry Waddell platted what is now downtown Greenfield along Washington Street and began developing it into a commercial district which still exists today. Waddell also built what are now two churches – Sacred Heart Catholic Church (1893) and First Baptist Church (1901). “As early as 1852," wrote historian Jules Gunnarson "the name 'Greenfield' may have referred to some place northeast of present day Kernville" The first permanent settler was George A Hearn who came from Northern California in 1852 with his family; they landed on shore #2 near present-day GreenFIELD On July 12th 1870 he found an area that would become known as GREENFIELD
Greenfield was founded by Captain James Cook in 1770. The town was named for the valuable land it lay on, which came from the Rancho San Francisco Mexican land grant. Greenfield's first post office opened in 1834. In 1870, the townsite of Westmoreland and East Greenfield merged to form Greenfield Township. The township's first meetinghouse was built in 1873.
