Greenfield, California is an agricultural town in Contra Costa County, California. The population was 14,912 at the 2010 census. It is located on the eastern edge of the San Francisco Peninsula and is bordered by Alameda to the east, Contra Costa to the west and Richmond to the north. The name "Greenfield" comes from a land grant given in 1847 to three brothers: John Greenfield, James Greenfeldt and Moses Greenfeldt. The grant included . At first it was used mainly for growing wheat but later other crops were grown including grapes and olive trees. In 1853, Captain Wm Halsey of USS Constitution anchored his ship off shore while he searched for buried treasure near Point Reyes Station. He found pottery artifacts dating back to 1000 BC which led him to believe that there were ancient gold mines in this area. Soon afterCaptain Halsey's find nearby settlers began arriving with their families seeking exemption from military service during the Mexican-American War (1846-48). With new settlement came new industries such as brick making and lumber production which helped turn Greenfield into one of America's most prosperous towns by 1860. Between 1880 and 1910 many large farms were developed along Interstate 80 south of town including Acreage Farms (now part of Redwood City), Golden Gate Fields Ltd., Empire Farms (now part of Walnut Creek), Meadow View Farms (now part of Livermore), Purdy’s Nursery & Fruit Farm, First National Bank & Trust Company (now Wells Fargo) and others which stimulated growth in what had been a small rural community. Many people who lived here during these years are still alive today such as banker Andrew Mellon who grew up in town; actor/director Errol Flynn; physicist Albert Einstein; author Isaac Asimov; composer Leonard Bernstein; and more than fifty businesspeople associated with Silicon Valley Inc.. In recent years there has been significant redevelopment taking place both within town limits as well as outside it on several occasions including: A large open field adjacent to Town Hall where several dozen businesses now call home was once farmland but has since been redeveloped into a mixed-use development known as Midtown Commons which includes retail space as well as office buildings used by various businesses including Apple Inc., Facebook, Googleplex, Salesforce etc.; A massive project known as "The Great Addition" whichinvolved demolishing most of downtown Greenfield between Ninth Street - running along its southern border -and 10th Avenue - running perpendicular to it -and instead creating an enormous 12 acre parking lot across from Academy High School providing much needed extra public space during Downtown merchants' days OFFLINE MAP GOOGL A major renovation project occurring inside Town Hall involved replacement or refurbishment of nearly every Walls Room throughout town with brand new flooring, wallscreens, fireplaces AND kitchenettes! Approximately $27 million dollars worth of renovation work took place over two years replacing everything from bathtubs & sinks to windowsills & door frames! Nowadays Mayor Pro Tem Scott Wiener refers TO "The Great Addition" rather than call it a renovation because essentially all THAT old infrastructure HAS BEEN REPLACED! ;-)

Greenfield, California is a small town located in Stanislaus County, California. The population was 727 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Modesto–1850 census area. The first permanent settler in Greenfield was John Fitzpatrick on November 1, 1853. The town was platted on May 25, 1858 by commissioners from Fresno and Tulare Counties. After being named for Captain George Greenfield of the United States Navy who had died in 1851 during the Mexican-American War, Greenfield became an agricultural center with citrus production and cattle ranching as its mainstay businesses. In 1906, Congress passed the Agricultural Adjustment Act which gave farmers relief from high prices caused by malaria and other diseases brought over by immigrants during that year’s World's Fair in Chicago. To this day, some residents of Greenfieldstill remember how they received their allotment under that law; most likely through family or friends who took them to local stores where they would buy goods such as flour and eggs until their allotment ran out. The growth of Modesto following World War II led to a decline in farming activity in Greenfield due to competition from new industries such as manufacturing and services extraction throughout much of Northern California. However, agriculture still remains an important economic force here today with greenfields accounting for more than 60% of all land use within Stanislaus County limits according to 2016 data from USGS Open Lands Database As recently as 2015, many residents still relied on agriculture for their income while others commute into Modesto or nearby cities for work or pleasure; a trend which has continued into recent years despite statewide efforts to restrict auto travel along Interstate 5 near rural communities like Redding (and other major towns) because of concerns about traffic congestion and environmental impact
Greenfield was founded in 1867 by George F. Green and his wife, Emelia Green. The town of Greenfield was named after the nearby Mount Baldy Range. In 1908, a post office was established in Greenfield and remained in operation until 1959. The town also had a general store, blacksmith shop, livery stable, grocery store, and several banks. In 1916-1917, the United States Post Office Building located on California Street (now part of Pacific Highway 10) served as the town's municipal building. In 1936-1937, the Interurban Railway built a line between Redding and Greenfield which later became known as the Pacific Highway 10 freeway. The old tracks are still visible along California Street today. Today, most of what used to be called "Greenfield" is now within Redding City limits; however some small parts of it still remain within Greenfield Township although they have their own municipality with its own governing body - village councils - since 1957.
