The first people to arrive in what is now Greenfield were Native Americans who hunted and gathered plants and animals for their food. They built villages on higher ground, near water sources, and used fires to cook their food. The Spanish arrived in 1769 and soon after founded missions in the area. The mission system ended with Mexican independence in 1821 and most of the land north of San Joaquin River was given to United States ownership. The city began as a farming community but grew rapidly when railways came through the area during the early 20th century. By 1925, Greenfield had over 60 businesses including banks, grocery stores, hotels, grain elevators, meatpacking plants and other factories. During World War II there were several bombing raids on Greenfield which destroyed many homes but no loss of life occurred as a result of war efforts. However following the war many jobs closed down due to technological advancements such as plastics production which caused environmental damage throughout the Central Valley economy that has yet to be fully reversed since then In 1957 Greenfield's first high school opened its doors to students from all over Fresno County Since then our town has seen growth both physically and socially with more than doubled its size within fifteen years Today we’re known for our vibrant downtown core filled with cultural venues such as The Players Theatre & Museum (home of Fresno Shakespeare Festival)

In 1924, it merged with nearby Redlands to form what is now known as Riverside County. The economy of Greenfield has been based on farming since its earliest days. Today, the town's largest employers are American Express (AEP) and Sutter Health System (SHS). Other major employers include Mesa Verde National Park (MVP), California State University - Fullerton (CSUF), and Paramount Pictures Corporation (PPC). The median household income in Greenfield is $72,500; however, it varies greatly depending on which neighborhood one resides within the city limits of Riverside County or San Bernardino County; the highest incomes are found near MVP while lower incomes can be found near SHS and CSUF
Greenfield was founded in 1850 by Major George Dole and his family. The town is named after the nearby Mount Diablo, which is also its namesake. Greenfield became a dry goods center during the antebellum period, thanks to its location near Sacramento and the Central Valley. In 1854, Greenfield was incorporated as a city. By 1880, Greenfield had more than 10,000 residents. The city's first mayor was James Moulder.
