Greenfield is a small town in Imperial County, California. It is located just east of the Nevada state line, and north of the Arizona state line. The population was 3,826 at the 2010 census. The community was founded in 1896 by men who had come from Greenfield, Massachusetts. The first post office in Greenfield was established in 1897. At that time it was called "New Beginnings." In 1907, the name was changed to "Greenfield". In 1930, after the death of its founder, Greenfield became an incorporated town with a Mayor and Aldermen form its governing body. In 1937, Greenfield annexed part of nearby Cottonwood Heights. The community grew rapidly during World War II due to wartime production of munitions plants and other associated industries; however, after the war ended there were few new businesses or residents until the late 1960s when a grocery store opened and started drawing people back to Greenfeldt Avenue. There has been some commercial development since then but overall growth has been slow due to natural resources not being as easily accessible as they once were; this has led to many problems such as air quality issues around some mills which have closed down over time (one is still active). However recent efforts by local officials and business owners have begun to reverse this trend. Today much of what used to be industrial land now contains residential homes while smaller areas along High Street contain more traditional businesses like restaurants and stores such as Walmart or KFC-Alliant Energy Incorporated (AEP) - both companies having been based here since before incorporation into townships created around them made it easier for these types of businesses locating close together). Greenfield is a city in Contra Costa County, California, United States. The population was 25,488 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Contra Costa County and home to the largest concentration of Apple Inc. employees in the world. The name "Greenfield" originated from an Indian word meaning "peaceful place." One early resident, John Greenfield, donated land for a Methodist church which later became known as First Unitarian Church of Greenfield. In 1878, business man George Willcox built a large cotton gin on what is now Park Boulevard in what is now downtown Greenfield. This area became known as the Cotton Fields because of its many acres of cotton plantations that were used for production until the late 1800s. In 1892, when twoCalifornia brothers named Edward Hirsch and Milton Hirsch founded their own grocery store in Redwood City (now Oakland), they decided to open a store in Greenfield too since it was then one of the most rural areas in California. They called it The Hirsch Store and began selling groceries and other sundries at different locations around town before finally opening their store on Market Street nearwhat is now Old Town Square (now part of Downtown San Francisco). From here they grew into one of Northern California's leading grocers with stores throughout Contra Costa County and beyond. By 1920 there were over 100 stores operated by Hirsch Bros., including 6 located within 1 mile (1 km) of each other onameda street NW between Third Street NW and Interstate 80; 3 just outside San Francisco along Market Street NW between University Avenue NE and Fifth Avenue NE; 1 across from BART Station on Townsend Road SE near Fremont; 2 east of Hayward on Fulton Highway; 2 west off I-680 just southof Isleton Road SW near Livermore
