Greenfield, California is a small city in Kern County, California. The population was 7,316 at the 2010 census. It is located on the east bank of the Kern River. The area now comprising Greenfield was first settled by Mexicans in 1848 as Rancho Viejo de las Animas. In 1851 it was granted to George C. Perkins and named for him, although he never lived there. By 1865 it had been renamed Greenfield after Captain John Greenfeld of the United States Army Corps of Engineers who had hiked from San Francisco overland to Yreka on January 17 that year in an attempt to survey North Californian water resources. The town began as a small cluster of adobe buildings near what is now downtown Greenfield; today most of the original settlement remains within its boundaries. Greenfield experienced rapid growth during World War II when war production increased demand for food and other goodsproduced in nearby Kern County and elsewhere in Southern California. Many new homes were built here including many dot-com millionaires such as Mike Ashley, president of Ashley Homes (now known as Parcel One) and his wife Karen Ashley Putney who co-founded MySpace; other early residents include Don Hewitt (founder Hewlett-Packard), Bill Gates (founder Microsoft), Warren Buffett ( Omaha businessman), Daren Ackerman (founder Daren Ackerman & Partners LLP), Jerry Pournelle (columnist for "The New York Times"), Dick Costolo (chairman and CEO Time Warner Entertainment Company) and Jay Leno.( television personality). Greenfield is a town in Kern County, California, United States. The population was 1,826 at the 2010 census. It is included in the Kern City–County seat of Bakersfield. Greenfield was founded in 1884 by George C. Smith and named for Green Valley Ranch east of Greenfield Lake on Captiva Creek. The town became a city in 1957 and adopted its current name in 1984 after it merged with other communities within the Kern City-County seat to form a new city-county government. The first residents of what is now Greenfield were Native American people who lived along the banks of Captiva Creek before migrating overland to what is now southern Kern County about two hundred years ago. European exploration began around 1769 when Captain Samuel Lewis discovered Mission San Gabriel Arcángel and land south of Captiva Creek was claimed by Spain as part of Alta California under Governor José Joaquin de Mendoza's command. A mission was established at still today's Captiva Park northeast of present day Greenfield on November 10, 1834 by Father Francisco Xavier Vallejo and Brother José Gomez de la Hoz with support from President Mexican Republic Manuel López Portillo In 1884, George C. Smith started farming west of Captiva Lake on what would become known as "Greenfeld" land grants given to him by his father-in-law, John Goldwin Smith (the founder of nearby Los Angeles). With improved irrigation systems and increased acreage available for farming following World War II, greenfields became more common throughout Kern County until the early 1960s when subdivisions replaced them as land values rose following plans developed by then-Mayor Percy Sutton (who later served as president California State Controller). In addition to becoming one of that county's most populous towns during its heyday between 1940 and1960; Greenfeld annexed portions of neighboring BakersFIELD on December 5th 1961 through concurrent resolutions passed both chambersmandate annexation if voter approval could be obtained from both cities’ respective Edgewood Zoning Boardings Ordinance Committee meetings held simultaneously that day at which time all but four homes within boundaries proposed for annexation were approved subject to necessary platting or soil test results reveal no significant difference between soils commonly used for agricultural purposes within those municipalities limits compared thereto - thus creating an unincorporated area comprising portions now located within GreeneField proper while annexing Emeryville into BakersFIELD - this unique event further solidifying downtown’s status among major metropolitan Fresno/BakersFIELD area metropolises during post WWII era Today there are approximately 9800 residents living within the incorporated boundaries +/- 375 households live outside municipal limits which includes 100% rural residences situated atop rolling hills forming edge upon edge open meadows bordered only occasionally by accompanying forests making up less than 2% total forested acres composing almost 60% total residential lots size wise +/- 375 dwellings occupied year round with most residents commuting either into or out of municipally defined downtown precincts typically enjoying tax breaks associated with said employment activities thereby reducing need for outdoor parking permits which can regularly exceed $100 per month depending upon arbitrary decisions made regardingLot sizeslingtonia trees confined strictly to newly platted areas adjacent main street limits providing limited shade year roundduring very hot summer months open fields adjacent streets therein sun exposure maximum allowed
Greenfield was founded in 1853 by Captain George H. Greenfield and his wife, Elizabeth. The town was named for the vast green fields that surrounded it. The first store in Greenfield opened in 1855. In 1865, the town became a city and changed its name to Modesto.
