Grover Beach is a small town in the county of Santa Clara, California, located about 20 miles south of San Francisco on Interstate 880. The population was 5,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Silicon Valley metropolitan area. Grover Beach's name may be derived from George Washington Carver, who settled there in 1887 and named it after his friend and business partner Alvan Grover (1863-1937). The community began as a small hamlet on the shore of Coyote Creek. In 1892, developer W. C. Perkins organized a township to house him and others in what would become Grover Beach Village. The first post office opened in 1896; it was called Coyote Creek then because most of its residents were Indians who hunted thereabouts. In 1898, when Coyote Creek became State Route 1A (now Interstate 80), Grover Beach became an incorporated municipality with a full police force and two churches. In 1915, local farmers started growing citrus fruit for shipment to markets outside Los Angeles; by 1920 groves had been established around both Coyote Creek and Second Street in downtown Grover Beach proper - now called Main Street - with some 25 fruit trees producing more than 1 million pounds of oranges per year! By 1930 groves covered nearly all First Street between Main and Third Streets; today only one tree remains standing on that stretch of once bustling streetcape dedicated to Oranges! In 1954, grove owners formed Pacific Fruit Growers Cooperative which grew oranges under contract until 1978 when they purchased all assets of United Fruit Marketing Corporation (UFM) – making them sole proprietors again! During their 40 years owning/operating/growing PGF&C groves across Northern California yielded more than 350 billion bushels of fruits & vegetables! Today’s groves are home to over 100 different cultivars yielding over 2 million pounds annually… giving our orchards plenty to offer consumers from coast-to-coast!
