The Grover Beach Army Base was home to the United States Marine Corps from 1951 until it closed in 1987. The base housed a variety of troops, including an infantry regiment and a artillery battalion. In 1951, the USMC decided to give away its weapons and equipment as part of an effort to reduce its workload.
