Grover Beach, California is a small town located in the Mono County, California of the U.S. state of California. The population was 5,898 at the 2010 census. The town is named after Grover Cleveland Hubbard who settled there in 1879 and became president of Northern Pacific Railway. The first post office opened in Grover Beach on October 26, 1884. The first store in Grover Beach was a general store run by Wm. Hickey and his wife Agnes Hickey which operated from 1886 to 1890 on Main Street near Whatcom Creek. In 1895, George Cushing opened the first hardware store in Grover Beach with his brother Owen Cushing being its first manager In 1898, Jno Purdy opened the second hardware store in Grover Beach with Harry Purdy as its first manager In 1902, A&W Automotive bought out Duryea's Store and began selling cars There were also several grocery stores before prohibition ended goods sales on December 15th 1906 In 1916 when Prohibition terminated alcohol sales in California all stores were closed but two; Purdy's Hardware and Sanger Drugstore reopened two days later because they had been given a ten percent discount off their regular prices by the State Liquor Authority
The Coast Guard was created as a result of the Spanish-American War in 1898. At that time, America was still reeling from the devastating earthquake and fire that had destroyed San Francisco in 1906. The military had been called in to help with reconstruction, but there were no resources or manpower to provide a national guard. So Congress passed an act on December 12th, 1898 establishing the Coast Guard as an agency of the United States Department of Commerce and Labor. In 1915, Congress appropriated $5 million for coast guard development, which would eventually total $30 million. This money went towards building new patrol vessels and increasing training opportunities for coastguardsmen. In 1933, the Coast Guard became fully operational under President Franklin D. Roosevelt’s Administration and began providing search and rescue services during hurricanes and other weather emergencies. Today, the Coast Guard is one of the most respected agencies within our society and plays an important role in maintaining our nation’s maritime security!

In 1923, Captain John Fries donated land to the town for use as a public beach and promenade. During World War II Grover Beach became one of the most heavily bombed areas in America with over 100 bombing raids. In 1951, President Harry S Truman declared Grover Beach an official city because it had met all requirements for incorporation including having a City Councilor and providing evidence that its citizens were actively participating in local government services. In 1959, Mayor Norma Reynolds declared Grover Beach an open-air recreation area which included both main beach areas as well as 5 miles of sand dune coastline extending into Monterey Bay

In 1979, Grover Beach became an incorporated city under state law.
