In Grover Beach, California, one of the first coffeeshops in the area was opened in 1913 by George Dillingham. It was here that Dillingham began roasting coffee for sale to local residents and businesses. The business grew quickly, and by 1916 it had moved to its current location on Main Street. Dillingham continued to roast his own coffee until his death in 1948. His business passed onto his son, who ran it until 1979 when it was purchased by Harry and Florence Kappelbaum. The Kappelsums continued to run it until 1996 when they sold it to Bradley Coffee Company. At this point, Grover Beach's coffee history had reach its modern day form with Bradley Coffee Company taking over operations of the original shop on Main Street. Today, Grover Beach is known as one of the leading coffee towns in California due to its high-quality beans and rich history. Grover Beach is a town in Kern County, California, United States. The population was 3,903 at the 2010 census. The name comes from theGrover Valley located in the town. The first permanent settler in Grover Beach was George Atherton on August 16, 1868. He and his wife Sarah erected a cabin on a small hill overlooking the Salinas River. By 1870, Atherton had built a house and store on the hill and named it Grover Beach after his father-in-law, General John Grover of Massachusetts. In 1872 Captain Fenton Sloat founded USS "Nassau" in Groveland harbor to supply goods to San Francisco during its early years as an ocean port. "Nassau" served until 1906 when she was decommissioned and sold for scrap to various owners before being scrapped at Saginaw Bay near Escondido in 1978. A post office called Grover Beach was established in 1875, but no mail ever arrived because there was no stop on the Oregon Trail between Sacramento and Alameda County until1885 when stagecoach passengers switching between North Coast towns stopped at Grover Beach for refreshments on their way back eastward from Marysville or Visalia (now Placerville). By 1886 Spring Valley had developed as a small farming community with some homes/cabins along Niles Creek north of present day central grove of trees which still stands today next to State Route 1 south of downtown Gormley Avenue corner across from KFC restaurant
