Grover Beach is a small town in Alameda County, California. It was founded in 1887 by John Grover and his wife, Lillie. The Grovers lived on the beach until their death in 1951. The town has a population of about 1,700 people today and it is located on the coast of the Pacific Ocean about 25 miles south of Oakland. Grover Beach began as an agricultural community that grew up around what is now the Grover Beach Pier. A wharf was built to service shipping coming into San Francisco Bay from the Golden Gate Bridge at this time. In 1887, Grover and his wife Lillie moved to Groveland Avenue and started a grocery store there which became one of the most popular businesses in town. The couple also operated a boarding house which served as a social center for local sailors and fishermen during their lunchtime breaks from working on their boats or fishing for eel off Point Lobos Island. In 1915, when Alameda County was created, Grover Beach became part of it. At first all of its residents were farmers who raised cattle or hogs; but later industry began to take hold with shipyards being built along the Coast Guard base near Point Lobos Island and other commercial interests beginning to establish themselves in grovebeach including Boeing Airplanes production facilities from 1948-1963 (the plant closed down due to emissions cheating) as well as other light manufacturing operations over time such as shoe factories (Powell's Shoes), Wernham Hogg Paper Company (now Mead Johnson Nutrition Inc.), Otis Elevator Company (now escalators manufacturer American Electric Power) and finally Hewlett-Packard Co.'s headquarters complex until they relocated outgrowing that area after 9/11 Ground Zero contamination made it unsuitable for any further activity/industrialization etcetera etcetera
Grover Beach was founded by Charles W. Grover in 1878. The town of Grover Beach was platted in 1879, and the first store opened in 1880. In 1886, the first post office was established in Grover Beach. The population of Grover Beach increased from 10 residents to 30 by 1890. By 1906, the town had a school and two businesses. The population declined during World War I due to enlistment in military service, but rose after the war ended. During World War II, Grover Beach became a military base for the United States Navy. After the war, most of the development took place within the present-day boundaries ofGrover Beach.
