By 1928, Kapp's Coffee Shop had become one of the most popular cafes in town. The store was known for its unique style of coffee brewing which involved using two water tanks to brew two cups of coffee at once. Kapp's Coffee Shop was also famous for its pastries such as cookies and donuts. In 1929, Kapp opened up his own bakery next door to the store. The bakery became well-known for their delicious chocolate cake and cinnamon rolls. By World War II, Grover Beach had come to be known as an important naval installation because it housed several Naval Air Station facilities including Naval Air Station Miramar (now San Diego County) and Naval Air Station North Island (now part of OCALA). During World War II, Grover Beach became home to Navy personnel who manufactured aircraft parts and other military hardware. In 1945, Grover Beach was transferred from the United States Navy to the Japanese Imperial Army during World War II. As part of Japan's occupation of California, many sailors were forced to move into towns like Grover Beach due to lack of housing options elsewhere in California. The city experienced some tough times during WWII as various ordinance changes were made that impacted businesses like Kapp's Coffee Shop/Bakery etc., but ultimately flourished after the war ended with new economic opportunities available thanks to post-war reconstruction efforts in California
Grover Beach is a small town located in the California Coast Ranges of northern San Diego County. The population was 5,865 at the 2010 census. Grover Beach is known for its waves and sand which can be found on both the shoreline and along the beaches within walking distance. The first Europeans to visit Grover Beach were Spanish explorers who landed there on July 14, 1542, during their travels up the coast of Northern California. They named it "Gobernador" after Emperor Ferdinand II of Spain because they thought it would be an easy place to find because of its huge waves. The first permanent settler in Grover Beach was Captain John Maynard Slidell who arrived in 1839. He built a house on what is now Promenade Drive and started trading with local Native Americans. By 1851, Grover Beach had a post office and one store. In 1853, slidell's brother-in-law, George Gibbs donated land near present-day Fourth Street for a public wharf that would service ships coming into San Diego Bay from Mexico City and other ports.. In 1861, when America became involved in the Civil War as part of the Union side, many grovers decided to leave their homes behind and join Lincoln's army due to fear of Confederate attack (although they did not actually fight). When war ended two years later, mostgrovers returned home but some continued to live in Mexico or Southern California until after World War II when most moved back into Grover Beach proper . During World War II many servicemen from nearby Imperial Valley served in Grover beach as Marines or Navy sailors; Milt Hinson among them . After the war many people left Grover beach for various reasons including retirement or changes in family composition . In recent years there has been a resurgence of interest in living here due to new development around town such as Strathcona Village which overlooks HWY 101; however much like any community size increase does have some limitations like increased traffic noise at night
