Half Moon Bay is a small town in Marin County, California, located on the north shore of San Francisco Bay. The population was 11,844 at the 2010 census. It is home to Half Moon Beach and Point Reyes National Seashore. The first Europeans to visit Half Moon Bay were Spanish missionaries in 1769. A mission was built here in 1821 by Father José Ortega y Gasset and it served as the only Catholic mission on the Peninsula until 1834. In 1868, Half Moon Bay became part of California when it was transferred from Oregon Territory to California. In 1893, it was renamed after Captain James Cook's vessel HMS "Endeavour" while under construction at Yerba Buena Cove Naval Shipyard in San Francisco. In 1954, Half Moon Bay became an unincorporated community within Marin County and has since grown steadily with suburban development around it. The name comes from two small islands off its eastern coast: Halfmoon Island and Crescent Isle (or Cresent Rock). The Point Reyes National Seashore covers much of southeastern Marin County including much of what is now Half Moon Bay; most of which had been undeveloped coastline before being designated as such in 1972 by then-President Richard Nixon during his first term in office. The seashore includes over 20 miles (32 km) of sandy beach extending into the Strait of Golden Gate below Sausalito and points beyond on both shores of San Pablo bay; plus more than 1,000 island huts that provide year-round access to more than 12 miles (19 km) of soft sand beaches along its entire circumference

However, recent economic growth has returned half moon bay back into prosperity by creating new businesses and expanding its tourism industry.
