Since the early 1800s, when a small group of Californians gathered on Half Moon Bay's beach to trade goods with Native Americans, the military has been deployed in California. Half Moon Bay is a secluded town in Sonoma County, California, United States. It is located on the east side of Napa Valley and has a population of about sixty. The first people to live in Half Moon Bay were Native American tribes who hunted and gathered at the nearby Half Moon Valley. In 1853, James Worthy founded Worthyville, which became Half Moon Bay after he bought land there from the local tribe. By 1870, Half Moon Bay had a post office and six businesses. The town was officially incorporated on May 15, 1892. The harbor around Half Moon Bay served as an important commercial center for wine country until World War II when shipping was diverted to more inland ports due to naval yards being built in San Francisco and other coastal cities. After World War II, most of the commerce moved away from Halfmoon Bay and it slowly lost its ZIP code status between 1970 and 1990. However, since 2000 it has regained its ZIP code because of its close proximity to Sonoma County's largest city of Santa Rosa. The town was named after the half moon found on Rancho San Rafael, which had been given to George Teague by Manuel Nieto in 1839. By 1850, Half Moon Bay had a population of 350 people. The town prospered due to its location next to the Monterey Peninsula and its access to the then new harbor at Monterey Bay. In 1863, Half Moon Bay became an incorporated city and started developing into a major seaport for California wine country. In 1880, it became one of the largest cities in California when it annexed nearby Redwood City. During World War II, Half Moon Bay played an important role as a naval base for Enesta Naval Air Station (now Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson). The harbor also served as homeport for USS Midway (CVN 71) during her 1943 bombing campaign against Tokyo's Yokohama skyline. In 1969,HalfmoonBay was designated a National Historical District by President Richard Nixon and was inscribed on the United States National Register of Historic Places in 1975. As part of that designation, HalfmoonBay developed into one of Northern California's most popular tourist destinations with visitors coming from all over North America to see its architecture, history and natural beauty.
Half Moon Bay area was first settled by the Miwok people in the late 1700s. The town began to form in 1853 when a group of businessmen and bankers, led by James H. Weaver, founded the Half Moon Bay Bank. After years of growth, Half Moon Bay became a major port for goods coming into California from southern Asia and the Pacific Rim. In 1909, Half Moon Bay was renamed after its then-largest city, Seattle, Washington. By 1930, nearly all of what is now Half Moon Bay had been annexed by San Francisco.
