The Half Moon Bay Arsenal was founded in 1899 by Captain John F. Hargrave and his crew of the USS Hartford as a gunnery school for sea captains. It grew into an army training ground, and eventually became the largest military installation in California. The arsenal produced some of America's most iconic weapons, including the M1 Garand rifle, the Thompson submachine gun, and the Jeep. In 1951, it was transferred to Ft. Ord and closed down. However, it reopened in 1955 as a museum dedicated to American arms production. It is now part of US Army Corps of Engineers Fort Huachuca Museum Complex
Half Moon Bay is located on the Pacific Slope of California, about 25 miles east of San Francisco. Half Moon Bay has a surface area of only 8 square miles, but its population was estimated to be over 100,000 in 2005. The bay's name comes from two small islands in the bay - Half Moon Island and Crescent Isle. The first Europeans to visit Half Moon Bay were the Spanish in 1821 while they were exploring missions in Alta California. The next year an American vessel called the Mariposa passed through the bay and named it after Half Moon Island which then became known as Crescent Isle because it had a crescent shaped rock outcropping at its tip. The early settlers who lived in or near Half Moon Bay were mainly fishermen and farmers who grew crops and raised livestock on their properties. In 1876, when water supplies were improved enough for shipping through the strait between San Francisco and Monterey, several thousand people began moving to Half Moon Bay from across Northern California. They brought with them their fishing, farming, and trade skills which helped make this town one of the most prosperous in all of California during that time period. During World War II many naval air operations took place at Naval Air Station halfmoonbay (later Naval Air Station El Toro) including landings on Catalina Island by U-boats during Operation Neptune's Spear; carrier-borne airstrikes against Japanese targets off Japan; and naval gunfire support for amphibious assaults ashore against enemy positions along Iwo Jima island throughout Okinawa campaign Phase One plus subsequent attacks against Japanese forces on Formosa during Okinawa CampaignPhase Two.

It is home to numerous cultural institutions including Mills College (the largest college within Marin County), Sonoma State University (one of Northern California’s leading universities), Adobe Systems Incorporated (largest computer manufacturer in Silicon Valley), Pier 55 Marina & Pier 57 Wharf which includes both retail space and commercial waterfront property that can accommodate up to 25 vessels per day for storage or pleasure purposes;[and] numerous restaurants including Jack In The Box., Panera Bread., Taco Bell., KFC., Denny’s®, Starbucks®, etc..
