The name "Half Moon Bay" comes from its location on Half Moon Hill (), which overlooks Sausalito and points to Tiburon Strait. The first Europeans to visit Half Moon Bay were boatswain George Vancouver and his crew in 1792. They named their spot Point Reyes after the then-uninhabited point near present-day Sausalito. In 1836, Jedediah Smith sent an exploring party up Tiburon Strait and discovered a promising site for trading at Half Moon Cove. In 1849, during the Mexican–American War, American forces under General Taylor destroyed a Mexican post at Point Reyes National Monument (). After that event Visitacion de Anza Expedition set out from Monterey with intentions of finding new land in California but only explored about half of what is now Marin County before returning home early due to illness; he had been inspired by British explorer Richard Burton's journey through North America (the first successful English exploration of that continent). The town started as an agricultural community around Half Moon Cove and gradually moved inland until it became an substantial community with several stores and four hotels by 1906 when access to Interstate 5 was opened. Half Moon Bay is a town in Marin County, California, United States. The population was 7,425 at the 2010 census. It is part of the San Francisco metropolitan area. The name was derived from Half Moon Hill, a feature on the southern edge of what is now Half Moon Bay. The first permanent settler in Half Moon Bay was James Irvine, who arrived in 1849 and built his own house onsite. By 1860, there were 30 residents living in three small villages along the bay: Irvine Creek Village (now known as East Beach), Point Lobos Landing/Half Moon Bay and North Beach. In 1861, Pacific Gas & Electric Company laid down its line from Sausalito to Half Moon Bay and began to service the town with electric lights; this event marked Asia's first commercial electricity connection outside of Europe or North America. In 1870s local physician Dr. George Bassett ran anopathic clinics in Point Lobos Landing and Point Reyes Station; these practices helped bring attention to half moon bay as a health resort destination for inland Californians seeking relief from chronic diseases such as tuberculosis and malaria during the late 19th century gold Rush era. In 1847, Half Moon Bay became the home of a small community of Mormon settlers. The town was founded by Captain George Washington Smith and his family as a seasonal stop on their wagon train route from Nauvoo, Illinois. By 1851, the town had grown to include ablockhouse, store, school and five families. In 1852, Half Moon Bay was incorporated as a city. By 1870, the population of Half Moon Bay had reached 2,500 residents and it was considered one of the most prosperous communities in California. However, during the 1880s local economic conditions deteriorated and by 1890 there were only 350 residents remaining inHalf Moon Bay.
