Half Moon Bay is a town located in Marin County, California. It was founded in 1887 by John C. Frémont and his wife, Rachel Carson. Half Moon Bay became a city in 1974 and still retains its rural feel. The town has a population of over 60,000 people and is the largest community on the Peninsula District of Marin County. The name "Half Moon" comes from English meaning half moon or crescent. The original mission was to find an anchorage for ships near Point Reyes National Seashore so that they could be unloaded without having to go through San Francisco's port of Oakland which would have caused congestion and pollution there. In 1853, Captain James Cook discovered Half Moon Cove where modern day Half Moon Bay is located when he sailed past Point Reyes Station on his final voyage around the world with HMS Endeavour. After Cook's discovery, many European shipbuilders built homes in what is now Half Moon Bay because of its sheltered waters and easy access to shipping lanes. In 1887, John C. Frémont founded Halfmoon Bay as an agricultural village after successfully agriculturalizing land northeast of Sausalito where he had been living since 1795 as part of Mexican Rancho Santa Cruz de la Cañada Blanca y Guellano grant from Spanish Governor Manuel Nieto de Obregon to Juan Bautista de Anza who named it Rancho Honda y Los Olivos after his home village Oviedo (now Olivas). Between 1886-1892 Frémont ran two failed commercial ventures - attempted grain shipments up the Russian River on specially rigged steamboats called "Dolphin," which never reached their destination; and attempted mineral rights purchases at Crystal City Desert Center near Palm Springs - both failures because no deposits were discovered but resulted in some high costs for goods shipped). This failure did not discourage him though – he continued working nonstop on most aspects of ranching until his death at age 91 in 1912 from prostate cancer at Mission San José del Valle de las Limasna (later Santa Barbara), about 25 miles east of Halfmoon Bay.. In early 1887, he also purchased 100 acres (40 hectares) north-northeast corner lot number 2 off Highway 1 between Carmelita Beach Rd., present-day Geyserville Blvd., and Tomales Ave., where today's Marina Village stands; this parcel would become known as Rancho Franciscan Jose Ortega y Gasset Park later renamed half moon bay park following donation by Mr./Mrs.(?) Peralta family during 1986 centenary celebration festivities After spending $1 million developing Storey Well Farm & Ranches 3 miles south along US 101 then traveling 10 miles round trip via Hwy 1 just beyond Prospect Valley Reserve Preserve Public Domain Land remnant watercourse draining into Atascadero Creek watershed thence Sonoma Creek watershed – development started July 1st 1886 with 5 male Laborers employed full time immediately including foreman & engineer who supervised daily work areas including grading & planting all our crops irrigated using 'Hague' waterwheel power operated by Captains Shea & Fenton boats moored offshore “weighed down” with rocks onto headland providing protection against flooding during wet season months April thru October
