The history of Half Moon Bay begins with Mission Santa Cruz de la Mesa (founded in 1777), as well as Mission San Miguel de Asís (founded in 1821). In 1836, American Commodore John D. Sloat claimed part of Alta California for the United States while under Mexican rule. America's first land grant was given to José Joaquín Moraga at Rancho Rinconada near present-day Half Moon Bay. Moraga named his property La Honda after the half moon that can be seen from his rancho's property line. In 1847, Captain James Cook sailed past Halfmoon Bay on his way to Tahiti when he sighted islands off its coast. After landing on one of these islands, Cook became interested in exploring them and ordered his men not to sail any further until he returned. Upon returning journey home, Cook discovered that an additional island had been added to La Honda - it later became known as Isla del Rey (Island of the Queen). In 1865, during World War II, USS Hornet bombed Japanese positions at Isla del Rey; this action resulted in heavy damage to nearby buildings and military supplies ashore. Aftermath of this attack led General Douglas MacArthur to order USS Purdy to bombard Isla del Rey again two years later; this time resulting in no casualties or damage ashore due to friendly fire! In 1957-1958 a new harbor was built at present-day HalfMoonBay Pierhead which facilitated large container ships entering and leaving through it daily without having their containers damaged by tidal waves or other vessels docking there accidentally Bottomless Pit Harbor served as an emergency port for Point Reyes National Seashorekeeper's Station during Tsunami events
