Half Moon Bay (formerly called Eureka) is a small town in Contra Costa County, California, United States. The population was 7,815 at the 2010 census. It is located on the eastern shore of San Francisco Bay and is bordered by Pinole to the north and south, Alameda to the east, Walnut Creek to the west, and Half Moon Bay Municipal Airport to the northwest. The first European settlers in what would become Half Moon Bay were Spanish missionaries who arrived in 1776. A post office called Half Moon was established in 1853 and remained in operation until 1915. The name "Eureka" was chosen for its resemblance to an eagle which had been seen near Mission Rock on Humboldt Bay. The half moon bay Naval Weapons Station was built at Point Conception about 1940 as part of World War II defense against Japanese submarines. After the war it became a research center for naval weapons development before becoming an Air Forcebase during the Cold War era.
