Half Moon Bay is a town located in Marin County, California, United States. The population was 7,847 at the 2010 census. It is part of the San Francisco Peninsula. The name " Half Moon Bay" comes from the half moon that can be seen on the horizon at night and during day when looking out towards Sausalito. The first documented reference to Half Moon Bay was in 1836 when Captain James Cooker visited the bay and called it "Hammersmith Strait". Half Moon Bay was founded on October 15, 1876 by Captains John Waddell and George Vancouver as an agricultural community near what is now Sausalito. The first post office opened in 1878 and remained open until 1918. In 1916, Half Moon Bay became part of Marin City and is currently governed by a Mayor-Council system with 13 residents per councilmember. In 2000, Half Moon Bay voted to become an independent city, which has since been renamed Marina del Rey. The harbor has been used for fishing since before Europeans arrived in Northern California; one report says Native Americans were using it for commerce as early as 1000 BC. A wharf was built on Point Reyes cape in 1775 by Spanish sailor Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo for his ship "San Diego", though he never landed there because of high waves (the point today is reachable only from high water). Commercial fishing began about 1800 with longline catches being taken off Point Reyes cape but it soon became clear that large commercial vessels could not go very far up or down the coast so whaling began around Point Reyes Light Station starting about 1850 becoming more extensive about 1870s employing many men who worked 24/7 along 1 mile wide strip filled with fresh water just offshore from where they caught their trophies schools of tuna fish 40 feet long “eating” their pray so that you got your share this way they did until 1975 when US Coast Guard closed all those areas due to overfishing also nets entanglement by cetaceans stopped most other activities except research done hereabouts
