Half Moon Bay is a town located in Marin County, California. It is bordered by the Golden Gate Bridge to the east and north, Sausalito to the west and south, and Tiburon to the north. The name was given to it by Captain John Bodega in 1847 when he discovered two small moons on what would become Half Moon Bay. The bay was named after Half Moon Island which is part of Tiburon Peninsula.
The National Guard has been a part of the United States since 1790. The first national guard units were fielded in 1792 and were called the Continental Army. In 1812, the 1st U.S. Infantry was organized and served as an auxiliary to the French army during the Napoleonic Wars. In 1861, America obtained its independence from Great Britain, and in response to this development, New York City formed its own National Guard unit known as the "National Guardsmen of New York". This unit helped protect New York City from Confederate attacks during the American Civil War. Between 1861 and 1865, there were also several other state-level National Guard units which served their respective states for various periods of time. As America entered World War II, many men answered call to serve in either military or non-military branches of government organizations such as the National Guard. Half Moon Bay is a town in Contra Costa County, California, United States. The population was 10,752 at the 2010 census. It lies on the ocean shoreline of the San Francisco Bay Area and is part of the Richmond-San Pablo Valley Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first permanent European settlement in Half Moon Bay was founded by Francis Drake on July 24, 1769 as San Miguel de la Mission near present-day Half Moon Beach. A second group of English colonists arrived in 1777 and named their new town after half moon—a symbol of British strength and maritime prowess. In 1851, Half Moon Bay became part of Napa County when it was annexed by that county. In 1866, Half Moon Bay became part of Novato Township when that township was formed from parts of Ruskin and Yerba Buena townships. The following year, Novato Township was renamed Cloverdale because a clover field had been selected for its location southwest of town center on Cloverdale Road (). In 1901,Half Moon Bay incorporated as a city under the name El Sobrante; however it reverted to its prior name two years later due to an amendment to the City Charter authorizing incorporation by special act only if there were no other cities within boundaries proposed for incorporation within three months after application had been filed with the city clerk's office. "El Sobrante" remained as an unincorporated community until 1966 when it reappeared as one of five cities located in Contra Costa County (the others being Hercules, Dublintown and Orinda). On February 25th 1971 "El Sobrante" became another city within Contra Costa County with full voting rights pursuant to section 516(b) of the Local Government Code (). On November 2nd 1990 "El Sobrante" again reverted back to its original unincorporated status pending resolution pending annexation into any other city or township within our borders."

The town was named after Half Moon Bay on Orcas Island in Puget Sound, Washington. It became an official port of entry for immigrants and goods arriving through the Strait of Juan de Fuca in 1851. In 1861, Half Moon Bay was renamed San Francisco because it had been chosen as the capital of California following the state's admission into the Union.
