The first permanent residents of Half Moon Bay were Japanese Americans who had come to America as workers in the 1930s and 1940s. They were followed by other ethnic groups during the next few decades, including Koreans, Vietnamese, Chinese and Latinos. Most Half Moon Bay residents are descendants of these early immigrants or their immediate families. Today, Half Moon Bay is an ethnically diverse community with a rich cultural heritage that includes Japanese rites and celebrations, Filipino cooking and singing traditions from Manila, Vietnamese American culture from Saigon to Tiburon Peninsula and Mexican American music from La Jolla to Monterey Peninsula. Half Moon Bay has been called "the most culturally resonant place in Silicon Valley" because its citizens share a wide range of interests and values that connect them together across different social circles. These include strong ties to nature: many people live near the ocean or water resources; there are several parks with outdoor activities for all ages; and more than half of all households have some form of garden or backyard plot. The townsite was founded on November 15th 1876 when land was sold tax-free to settlers in what is now MidtownSan Francisco by Calumet County Commissioners John McLaren (1801-85) and George Hearst (1847-1937). The name "Halfmoon" came from two pieces of property - one piece measuring 50 feet long by 15 feet wide at where Hwy 101 meets Point Lobos Rd., while the other measuring 25 feet long by 12 feet wide at another point about 1/4 mile south along Point Lobos Rd.. This latter parcel also included a small bay which gave its name to both streets running through town - Hwy 101 Harbor Drive & Hwy 128 Long Beach Blvd.). The first post office opened in 1877 under this new name: HalfmoonBayPostOffice.(Hearst moved his Coastal Surveyor's Office from nearby Daly City into Halfmoabay after purchasing it in 1875.) In 1886 24 acre section 4 north of present day Main Street acquired by Captain George Hearst for $1 due him for his share in building Golden Gate Bridge over Russian River -(now Embarcadero Marina District). After years spent prospecting for good land around this area Captain Hearst bought 640 acres (27 km²) southwesterly extending into what is now South San Francisco Creek Canyon on March 20th 1892 just shy of his seventieth birthday – making him oneof youngest commissioners ever appointed to Calumet County!
