Half Moon Bay is a small town in San Luis Obispo County, California, located about an hour south of downtown Los Angeles. The population was 12,898 at the 2010 census. Half Moon Bay is known for its wine and cheese industry, as well as its surfing beaches. The first Europeans to visit Half Moon Bay were the Spanish in 1821 and they named it Playa de la Muerte (Port of Death). The name may be derived from thesoaked sand which lined the coast when ocean waters receded after a long drought. The Coast Miwok occupied Half Moon Bay before European contact. The Mission San Gabriel Arcángel founded in 1797 near what is now Half Moon Bay could have been called "Mira de la Muerte" or "halfmoon bay". A later mission built on top of Point Loma became known as "Mission San Fernando Rey" or "Straits of Death". In 1846, General Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna ordered Major José Joaquin Crespo commanding all Mexican forces west of the Rio Grande to march on Monterey Peninsula with orders to take possession of all Californias without offering quarter to the people. At that time only 10%of California's population was under Mexican rule; most lived in Mexico City and other large cities. No one knows how many Californians died during this march but estimates range up to 50%. When Mexico lost control over California following the Mexican-American War, General Rafael Montero took over command and ordered all Californians under his jurisdiction east of the Sierra Madre into slavery until their liberation by Ulysses S. Grant in 1848. A few hundred white men continued living illegally on these coastal areas until 1860 when Governor Pio Choate issued a proclamation ordering them all off shore and into inland villages like Paso Robles or Corralitos where they would remain until granted land at Rancho Seco outside Sacramento Valley along with other non-native residents who had also been taken advantage of by American settlers: Anglo-Saxons were given 160 acres (66 ha) at least while Hawaiians received 640 acres (248 ha) plusatcherie . But no one moved inland! After several years’ occupation by various groups including Native Americans, Mexicans,Anglos and Chinese immigrants totaling 12 percent of local residentry according to 1890 census data ... over half a century elapsed before any permanent white settlement materialized within easy reach of fresh water resources essential for agriculture .... It finally happened around 1915 when World War I destroyed much shipping traffic through Monterey Harbor making Half MoonBay an ideal spot for military airstrips used by both sides during World War II .... German aircrews flying Spitfires dropped supplies behind enemy lines over southern California during WWII .... After 1945 more than 60%of residents were Japanese nationals primarily farmers working on military reservations .... In 1984 local businessman Jack London set out1to developoffice parkland adjoiningthe beach ..... Today visitor numbers are increasing each year due halfmoonbayandthebeachcomprises nine distinct neighborhoods well worth exploring
