Sloat chartered USS Hornet to explore the coast and report back on its potential for gold mining. The ship arrived at Half Moon Bay in January of 1854 and made landfall just north of Point Reyes National Park. After disembarking his crew, Commodore Sloat hired local fishermen to help him survey the area for prospects of finding gold. Soon after, he realized that there was no gold available in this part of California, but he continued to hunt for it anyway because he believed that it would be worth more money than nuggets!
