The United States Air Force has a long and proud history of providing gifts to the Hanford community. From airplanes to missiles, the USAF has always been there for those in need. Today, the USAF continues this tradition by gifting unique items such as rifles and pistols to residents at the Hanford Site Weapons Storage Facility (WSFS). The WSFS is home to over 1,000 weapons storage facilities across America that make up part of the US Department of Defense’s stockpile of Ready-to-Use munitions. In 1941, when World War II began, the USAF gifted an airplane to the Hanford Site on behalf of local farmers. Since then, more than 60 planes have been donated or leased by the USAF at WSFS. Some aircraft have become iconic while others have been used primarily for logistical purposes or are still unaccounted for. One plane that has come into contact with many people throughout its history is The Boeing 727 Flying Fortress. In 1948, after years of design and engineering work, The Boeing 747 was finally born! This large passenger jet flew its first commercial flight in Seattle on October 16th that year; it would be followed by another two dozen flights before being retired from service in 2001. However, this wasn’t just any old 747 – it was one that had once belonged to The United States Air Force! On September 15th 1954, during Operation Paperclip – which saw American civilians brought over to Nazi Germany as war criminals – The Boeing 727 Flying Fortress flying from Frankfurt Airport arrived at Wenden AFB in Germany under tow behind a tractor trailer laden with supplies for German scientists working on Rocket Technology! It was here that Flight 77 first interacted with humanity… until it crashed into Building 9 at WTC7 on September 11th 2001! In honor of Flight 77 and all that came before it, one wingtip has been preserved as a memorial near Amsterdam Airport Schiphol!
There is no doubt that the Air Force has a powerful and deservedly impressive gift for their citizens. The service provides an unequalled level of protection to our country, its people and its infrastructure. It is an essential part of our freedom and democracy, as well as one of the most committed members of NATO. The Air Force has always been a key player in our armed forces, providing world-class capabilities both offensively and defensively. In recent years, however, the Service has made strides in many important areas including technology development and acquisition, logistics support, special operations forces training and more. This year’s airforce gift was no different. The Service announced on September 24th that it had awarded Lockheed Martin a $4 billion contract to provide upgrades to the F-35 Joint Strike Fighter aircraft program. This will include new engines, software and other systems that will improve flight safety and performance. This is just one example of how the Air Force is working hard to keep America safe – from hardware purchases such as this to innovative ideas like Project Athena which helps young college students get experience in engineering or law enforcement work while still completing their undergraduate degree.
The United States Air Force gift history in Hanford, California began with the organization of the Hanford Arsenal on August 16, 1942. The first aircraft produced at the new plant were B-24 Liberators. On November 5, 1942, the Air Forces Technical Service Command was activated and directed to takeover all aspects of munitions production at Hanford. The following year, on December 10th, 1943 General Electric Company became a part of ATC and took over production of T-2 trainers at the plant. In 1945 General Electric Company donated an additional 100 acres for use as a munitions factory campus. In 1947 General Electric Company merged with Westinghouse Industries Corporation to become Westinghouse Electric Corporation. After World War II ended and production of nuclear weapons stopped, most of the plants were closed down by Westinghouse in 1948-1949. However some buildings still stand today including plutonium processing plants (Plutonium Plant 1 & 2), reactor building (Reactor Building 1), airfield (Airfield 1), storage areas (Storage Areas 1 & 2) and post office (Post Office Building).
The Hanford Site is a national monument located in the Yakima River watershed near Wenatchee, Washington. The site is home to the world’s largest plutonium production facility and one of the most important environmental actions of the 20th century. The plant was closed in 1986, but Plutonium-239 still remains present at the site and has been used to produce energy for more than 50 years. Hanford formed when two small towns – Richland and Duwamish – merged to form one town on April 12, 1959. At its peak, Hanford had a population of 37,000 people. The town was founded as an agricultural center that processed goods from local growers and shipped them downriver to Tacoma for export. In 1957, Hanford became home to North American’s first reactor manufacturing plant. This plant manufactured nuclear reactors for Russia during the Cold War era. It also produced much plutonium product which was used to make fuel rods for other reactors throughout America. In 1984, Congress designated all of Yakima River watershed as part of National Monument status with a focus on preserving natural resources and preventing human interference with nature
The United States Air Force (USAF) is one of the world's largest air forces with a membership that exceeds 100,000 individuals. It has been in existence since World War II and was formed as the Second Air Force on October 21, 1942. The USAF traces its origins to American military aviation units stationed in Europe during World War I. In 1919, the USAAF founded the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics (NACA), which developed jet aircraft technology. In 1947, the USAF became an all-volunteer organization and began operation of nuclear-powered strategic bombers. On July 20, 1949, it was announced that General Curtis LeMay would become commander in chief of the USAF and implement what came to be known as "the LeMay Doctrine." In 1951, Congress passed legislation creating the Department of Defense (DoD) which included within it both the USAF and DoD's predecessor agencies: Army Aviation Corps (AAC), Navy Aviation Corps (NAVY), Marines Aviation Command (MARCOM), and Air Research & Development Command (ARDC). The newly created DoD assumed responsibility for all USAAF assets across all services. The USAF absorbed several other component organizations over time including AAC at Wright-Patterson AFB; NAVY at Pearl Harbor Naval Station; Marine Aircraft Group 11 at Muroc AB; ARDC at Edwards AFB; Aeronautical Division Headquarters at Langley AFB; Tactical Data Processing Branch HQs at Offutt AFB and Randolph AFB; Bombardment Wing HQs at Eglin AFB/McDonnell Douglas TX; Strategic Missile Center Moonstone Island HI; Weather Bureau Hawaiian Islands Division HQ on Guam. On November 1, 1961 - six months after taking office - President John F Kennedy proposed Operation Neptune's Spear which sought to develop ballistic missile capability against Cuba using North Korean missiles being built by North Korea’s government under direction from Russia. This proposal was met with opposition within the Pentagon due to concerns about potential escalation into a Cold War conflict over Cuba. Ultimately JFK approved Operation Neptune's Spear but also directed his Secretary of State Dean Rusk to develop plans for any potential response should Cuba launch a projectile into orbit or if such a launch were attempted without warning America or its allies. Withdrawing support from Moscow helped ease these fears while also providing justification for additional deployments throughout NATO member countries should Cuban missiles be deployed targeting those nations!
