The United States Army Garrison at Hanford was established in 1941. It was part of the larger Fort Harrison military installation, which also included the newly created Los Angeles County Airport. The army garrison's primary mission was to provide an operational headquarters for soldiers and civilians who lived and worked at the airport. In 1962, the army garrison moved to its current location on State Route 99A in rural Hanford County. At first, the army garrison consisted of only a few buildings and a handful of enlisted men. However, over time, it grew into one of the largest U.S.Army installations in terms of land area and population. The garrison has made significant contributions to both Hanford Valley National Monument and California Highway 99A. Today, there are more than 14,000 troops stationed at Fort Harrison – including 3 brigade combat teams (BCT), 1 Armored Brigade Combat Team (ABDT), 2 Field Artillery Brigade Combat Teams (FABCTs), 2 Infantry Brigade Combat Teams (IBCTs), 1 Missile Battalion (MBN), 4 Aircraft Maintenance battalion (AMB), 5 Veterinary Vaccine Laboratory detachment (VVL) and numerous support units such as artillery batteries, human resources divisions, engineering battalions, supply depots and command posts.

The garrison grew to include a hospital, armory, chapel, and other buildings in the early 1920s. In 1942 the USAAF began using Hanford as an airbase for its bombing missions over Japan. The garrison closed in 1945 but reopened in 1951 as an army post. It was sold to the city of Hanford in 1957 and became an municipally-owned airport.
Hanford is a man-made site in the northwestern corner of California, about 137 miles (220 km) northwest of Los Angeles and just south of Seattle. The area now occupied by Hanford was first settled by Native Americans in the late 18th century, and became a military base during World War II. After the war, Hanford became a center for plutonium production and disposal, and it continues to be used today as an environmental monitoring and cleanup site.

In 1948, the Hanford nuclear reservation was created in western Washington. The site had been used for mining and processing coal since 1871. In 1939, the United States government decided to build a plant to produce plutonium for the Manhattan Project. With World War II raging, there was little room at Hanford for new construction. To make space, workers demolished part of an existing hill and built a large reservoir on top of it. The plutonium production plant began operations in 1949 and lasted until 1957. It produced more than 1 million metric tons of plutonium each year. The plant is one of the largest in the world and has left a lasting legacy on Hanford Valley: It is now a National Monument owned by the United States government and managed by Hanford District National Recreation Area (HDNRA). TheHanford Site also contains otherimportant sites associated with America’s nuclear weapons program: The Federal Reactor Building (FRB), which housed two uranium enrichment plants; plutonium production testing at Y-12; and classified military installations like Dugway Proving Ground wherebomb tests were conducted before becoming national secrets.
Hanford was founded in 1876 by the Sisters of Charity. It became a U.S. government atomic research center in 1943, and is still a major nuclear power plant today.
