By 1969, there were six active Destroyer Commands housed at NABP - three Destroyer Divisions (DEAGLE 2-6), four Submarine Commands (SUBMARINE 3-4), and one Amphibious Warfare Commands (AMPHIBOUS WARFARE COMMAND 3-7). In 1970, Congress passed legislation creating Naval Shipbuilding Center Newport News/Norfolk Bay (NSNBC) within COMNAVFORSTPAC with orders to build up to twenty ships per year thereafter. NSNBC quickly built up its capabilities by acquiring vessels such as USS John F Kennedy(CVN 74), USS Enterprise(CVN 65), USS Richmond(CSN 71), USS Cowpens(LHD 9),USS Yorktown(CG 58),USS Montero(GALVESTON)(LPD 26) and more! Today, we continue to see increased production levels at our naval facilities around the country; examples include: The Jack Latham Class Carrier Enterprise just completed her maiden voyage into dock here at NABP after being delivered May 15th; And our newest class of destroyer – The George Washington Class Carrier Mike Mullen arrived yesterday after completing her final sea trials!
