Hanford is a city in Tehama County, California, United States. The population was 53,777 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Fresno–Hanford Metropolitan Statistical Area. The city was founded in 1887 by miners who had come to the area from Nevada. The federal government first began construction on the Hanford Site in 1865 as part of the General Order No. 9 contraction of army camps along the Feather River corridor and adjacent public land lying between Sacramento and Oroville Counties in northern California. Work on Site A began seriously in 1867, when President Johnson directed Secretary of War Edwin Stanton to carry out plans for an engineering corps with jurisdiction over all military camps within five miles of Puget Sound so that work could be done "relieving our labor parties from what would otherwise be their only resort." This order laid down strict guidelines for site selection and construction: sites were not to be located near populated areas or watercourses; earthworks were to be massive; no buildings whatsoever were to be erected before a full survey had been made; and all materials used must meet Department of Defense Specifications for quality, performance, durability and fire resistance (DFS spec numbers 5302-5367). In spite of these regulations, some early Hanford engineers built elegant homes near Site A while others constructed crude barracks nearby. Work proceeded slowly because funds were scarce until President Franklin D. Roosevelt issued Executive Order 9358 on April 21st, 1933 which called for contracted work at two other Army Camps - one at Yucca Valley and one at Mono Lake - both located about 25 miles east-northeast of Hanford City proper on Highway 395 between Stockton and Visalia Junction Road. These orders authorized $165 million dollars worth of contracts for 1,270 workers including 735 contractors working at three sites - all but 22% male! Although most men worked offsite simply clearing debris or building roads or bridges rather than performing any significant engineering tasks outright (and women did much more domestic work back then), many men instantly became experts with tools and equipment as they came into contact with hard rock mining techniques for the first time ever! Because there was now an available workforce outside agriculture (much like there has been throughout history when technology advances), local businesses flourished as new industries developed around this large project such as shipbuilding (the USS Bogue was built using plutonium recovered from Japan's Kōchi nuclear bomb tests), aircraft manufacturing (the Consolidated Aircraft Company's P-38 Lightning fighter plane) and defense research laboratories like Los Alamos National Laboratory where scientists developed America's first atomic bomb! Despite occasional protests by farmers who felt they had lost their rights to sell food grown near the plant due to its proximity both geographically AND chemically (!), production continued unabated until 1945 when it was curtailed by American troops retreating from Japan after World War II. Thereafter several rounds of negotiations followed between DOD/Agency representatives & tribal leaders culminating with a document known as "The Agreement Of December 15th" which transferred ownership & management over DOE Sites 2 through 4 (& associated holdings around them) back to Native Americans...in effect ending white man’s dominion over these lands forever! Today’s Hanford community sprang up almost entirely during WWII due to centerline munitions testing conducted nearby by U2 Test flight activities during WW II + subsequent cleanup operations following bombing raids & fires

Hanford was founded on April 10, 1868, by the United States government as a site for the creation of a new military reservation. The land at Hanford was acquired from the Chemehuevi tribe. The first plant to be created at Hanford was the National Reclamation Project’s “Hoover Dam” in 1915. The project yielded large profits for American capitalists and helped lay the foundation for America’s economic superpower status in the 20th century. The Hanford Site is a federally owned and managed industrial area located in southwestern Oregon and includes parts of north-central Washington and east-central Idaho. It has been used for manufacturing since 1914, when it became part of Union Carbide Company’s plutonium production facility. In 2000, after years of debate over its future, Congress decided to transfer continues operation of Hanford to two nonprofit organizations—the Pacific Northwest Regional Environmental Laboratory (PNREL) and Western Forest Products—for continued research, education, and management. These decisions ended more than 150 years of federal ownership and control over this sector of northwest Oregon. Today, many people living near or within miles of Hanford continue to suffer from health effects from radioactive materials released during nuclear weapon testing conducted there during World War II and afterwards—a legacy that still affects residents today
