Hawaiian Gardens, California is a small city in the county of Los Angeles, about 25 miles (40 kilometers) south of downtown Los Angeles and 18 miles (29 kilometers) north of Hollywood. The population was 739 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Valley Cities micropolitan area. The original site where Hawaiian Gardens now stands was purchased by Captain James Cook on November 12, 1779 during his first attempt to find a new route to Asia. He named it "Dahiau" after his ship, HMS Resolution, which had already reached Tahiti and Oahu before him. In 1824, the United States acquired Kaua'i from Hawaiʻi for $2 million in what became known as the Treaty of Mauna Loa. The land around Hawaiian Gardens was used for agricultural purposes until 1902 when it was annexed by LA County and designated as part of its rural community program. In 1907, Mayor Oscar Wouk bought 5 acres (2 hectares) near today's intersection of Western Boulevard and Alameda Street from Mr. Elihu Brawley for $5100; he planned to develop it into an open-air market with produce from his farm east of town on Alpine Avenue and from there sell goods door-to-door throughout his city limits. By 1909 Honolulu Electric Company had completed its line between Pasadena and Culver City serving Hawaiian Gardens as well; this made Hawaiian Gardens an important commercial center in southern California
