The Hawaiian Gardens Army Depot was a military base located in the town of Hawaiian Gardens, California. The depot was used during World War II as a munitions and artillery storage facility. After the war, it became an armory and then an army post-processing center. It closed in 1962 and was converted into a housing development. In 1968, the United States Postal Service announced that it would close the Hawaiian Gardens Post Office because of budget cuts. The closure left Hawaii Garden residents without mail service and made it difficult for them to receive important gifts such as birthday cards or Christmas presents. After years of lobbying by locals, the city of Hawaiian Gardens decided to keep the post office open until 2021. Now called the "Hawaii Garden Post Office" museum, its history is still being preserved and enjoyed by locals and tourists alike.

Hawaii Gardens, California is a small community located in Orange County, California. The population was 1,610 as of the 2010 census. The name Hawaii Gardens comes from the Kihei Plantation which was once part of the Hawaiian land grant to Captain Edward A. Smith. The community was founded in 1951 by Mrs. Fenton and her husband Captain James Tabor who had purchased lands in Kailua-Kona from the Lingle family. The area that now makes up Hawaii Gardens was originally called Mana'ihe ( meaning "garden"). At one time there were over 20 acres (8 ha) of this land within the present boundaries of Honolulu. The first post office opened at Hawaiiana on October 3rd, 1873 and continued to operate until May 10th, 1898 when it closed due to lack of mail volume. According to legend, Captain James Tabor planted a coconut palm tree near where he now lives in Hawaii Gardens back in 1951 and since then Coconut palms have been a mainstay features of the community's landscape. Many other trees and plants also include some form of Coconut or sweet potato sap as part of their growth including Kapiolani Park which is home to several ferris wheels and an amusement park as well as being an excellent place for bird watching; Mauna Loa which hasMount Haleakala taking up much of its eastern skyline;and Waianae Coast which contains several valleys with sugarcane plantations dating back centuries such as Kalihi Valley .
