Hawaii Gardens, California is a suburb of Los Angeles and has been home to the United States Army since 1959. The current site of the military installation is located in Echo Park, near an old Boeing plant. The first Soldier's Home was built on what is now Fourth Street in Echo Park in 1959. It was used as a barracks for newly inducted soldiers and their families. After being enlarged and renovated in the early 2000s, it became known as "The Soldiers' Village". In 2007, The Soldiers' Village was listed on the National Register of Historic Places. In 2008-2009, Phase II of The Soldiers' Village was completed which included a Veteran's Affairs Department Clinic and 3 buildings that served as dormitories for enlisted members and their families. Hawaii Gardens, California is a small town located in Imperial County, California. The population was 1,752 at the 2010 census. The town is named after the gardens that once graced its downtown square. The original land for the gardens was donated by Captain James Cook and his wife, Lady Catherine de Bourgh, when they visited Hawaii in 1778. After he died in 1779, she gave the property to her husband’s friend and fellow captain Rear Admiral John Young who made it into a public garden with an open field on one side and a large palace-like structure on the other. In 1941 post World War II fence restrictions were placed on Hawaiian Gardens by Federal authorities because of concerns about illicit fuel storage and use there by Japanese nationals living in undetermined areas near the parkgrounds. Since then development has taken place around and within Hawaiian Gardens boundaries which has included new housing developments as well as expanding access to public recreation areas such as tennis courts, playgrounds, mountain biking trails and hiking routes through lush forested slopes bordering the parkland adjacent to Interstate 5 close to Waianae Boulevard/Kamehameha Highway exits 7B & 7C - making it easily accessible from almost anywhere in Southern California without leaving Hawaii's beautiful islands! Today Honolulu Garden's beauty can be seen throughout much of Southern California including Downtown Los Angeles; San Fernando Valley; Orange County; Ventura County; Kern County; Bakersfield; Modesto; Santa Cruz Mountains (northwest corner); San Diego Bay Area (southwest corner). It is bordered by Claremont to the north and east, Lancaster to the south, and Ontario to the west. The community was founded in 1887 as a small resort town on Oahu Island by Captain James Cook who named it after his home island of Hawaii. After Cook's death in 1778, his estate passed through several hands before being sold to William Randolph Hearst in 1907 for $15 million. Hearst developed Hawaiian Gardens into one of Hollywood's most popular tourist attractions, creating a barrier-free environment featuring elaborate gardens complete with exotic trees and plants from all over the world. The first structures were built on Oahu Island during World War II as barracks for military personnel stationed there during the war effort. From 1946 until 1959 Hawaiian Gardens was operated as an amusement park with rides and attractions such as a Ferris wheel and water parks. In 1959 it became part of Disneyland when it opened up to public enjoyment following its conversion from anTheme Park into an amusement park under Walt Disney's new policy that all theme parks be open to everyone regardless of age or identification at least seven years old (the original rule had been that only those aged three could enter).
