Hawaii Gardens dates back to the early 1800s when a group of Hawaiian men and women founded a plantation on the island of Kaua'i. The men worked as farmers andhaulers, while the women ran the garden. In 1868, a U.S. Army officer named James Kipuka bought the plantation and moved all of the people and their animals to what is now Kaneohe Bay on Oahu. In 1898, after annexation by the United States, Kaua'i became part of Hawaii and Hawaii Gardens continued to be run by American citizens until 1959.
