Hawaiian Gardens is a city in Orange County, California, United States. The population was 36,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Los Angeles metropolitan area. In 1907, Hawaiian Gardens was established as a resort on the original site of what is now Mid-Wilshire Boulevard and Riverside Drive by developers Byron W. Edwards and his brother Harry C. Edwards. In 1909, Hawaiian Gardens became an incorporated town with a general store and post office. On November 12 of that year, Mayor Hakekaua Ewing dedicated the new jail which stood just east of town center on Morningside Drive near today's intersection of Mid-Wilshire Boulevard and Riverside Drive. The jail housed local criminals until it closed in 1951 when it was replaced by the current jail complex which stands today onsite

The name Hawaiian Gardens is from the nepean island country where it was built. The developer who purchased land for the gardens in 1907 was Samuel Insull. He used his profits from two unsuccessful attempts to build a power plant on Nepean Island in order to finance the $350,000 project that included planking and other construction materials brought over by ship. The $2 million garden would be formally dedicated on July 4th, 1912 by Governor Hiram Johnson with an audience that included President John F Kennedy and Mrs. Eleanor Roosevelt. The gardens have been visited by presidents and celebrities since their dedication including Elvis Presley who bought a home there in 1956 after being given an address by Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa at nearby Hollywood Forever Cemetery
