In the Hawaiian Gardens area of California, there is a Marine Corps Base that was established in 1958. The base is home to the 7th Marines and it also serves as the headquarters for Marine Forces Hawaii. The ZIP code for this community is 92412. Hawaii Gardens was first developed in 1922 by John A.Kapioli as part of his efforts to increase citrus production in what was then an agricultural area. Kapioli's plan called for the erection of a large citrus orchard with trees that would have a canopy covering an area of . The orchards were destroyed during World War II but were rebuilt and are still in use today. The current name came about when one resident asked another if they wanted to call their community "Hawaiana" after the popular Hawaii island chain known for its lush tropical plants and beautiful scenery. A number of other towns in Northern California adopted similar names over time: Alpine Village (1927), Larkspur Valley (1938), North Hollywood (1945), Santa Monica Hills (1948), Brentwood Heights (1950), Mira Mesa (1955), West Covina (1960) and Garden Grove Township (1970). In 1957, Hawaiian Gardens merged with neighboring Riverside to form a new city named after John A.Kapioli, which quickly became known as "Hawaiana City". The original city boundaries were unchanged until 1990 when they were enlarged to include portions of Fontana and Ontario

Hawaii Gardens, California is a small town in the Central Valley of California, about an hour east of San Francisco on I-580. The population was 2,814 at the 2010 census. It was founded by Captain James Cook and his men upon their return from the Polynesian Voyage in 1778. The first settlers were farmers who farmed two small parcels of land that became the present-day Hawaii Gardens neighborhood. The garden started as a private enterprise run by Captains Cook and David Griffiths, two Englishmen who had come to support American independence during the late 18th century. In 1821, after America's admission to the United States, President James Kapp assigned Hawaiian Gardens to be part of what would become San Francisco. After 50 years in continuous operation as a public parkland and nursery for trees and plants, Honolulu founder Hawai'i Puna Heiau Domain (the largest parcel still under cultivation) was sold to US citizens in 1903 for $1 million. In 1912–1913 decisions were made about which aspects of Hawaiian Gardens should be kept as part of San Francisco while those areas should be turned over to Honolulu for use as an open-air Olympic stadium and other purposes; this included reducing acres in Hawaii Garden from . In 1933 all portions of Hawaiian Gardens except Heiau Domain were transferred back to Hawai'i Puna Heiau Domain; however some lands including Mauna Loa remained with SF because they form part of Golden Gate National Recreation Area. Today most parts of Hawaiian gardens are open to visitors through Discovery Park or Kamuela Atoll Preserve entrances closed off from visitor access due to safety concerns caused by feral animals such as rats and cockroaches living on sensitive plantings near visitor amenities such as restrooms and picnic tables. Hawaii Garden opened its doors on December 12th 1874 when six children playing near one of Captains Cook's canoes found driftwood covered in green ferns that had been collected during their earlier voyages aroundhauling goods up Pearl Harbor from ashore
