After Vietnam ended, Camp Haleiwa reverted to its original function as a storage facility for weapons again until 1971 when it became home to Army Aviation Command Headquarters once again after being vacated by Air Force Headquarters at Andersen Air Force Base in 1978-79 due to budget cuts within DOD caused by President Nixon's proposed budget reductions known as "the Younger Mr." In 1994-95, Naval Surface Warfare Center Newport News (NSWC) moved from its previous location at DeSoto AFB just outside downtown Honolulu into what is now known as camp Haleiwa Annex located off Kalakaua Ave., east of Waimea Rd., near Navy Beach Park’s beach access point on Kaneohe Bayou adjacent to KHG Marine Corps Base Kaena Point leased from USMC Kilauea Point Lighthouse Trustees Incorporated Via Agreement dated 5/2/1994 between Healy Michael J., Mayor pro tem (Kaneohe City) & Honorable Aloha Eileen Aiello (Honolulu County Councilmember representing District 3), effective 7/1/1994 . Although most of the original trees were replaced with more modern versions after Hurricane Katrina destroyed many homes in 2005-2006, there are still several iconic trees standing today including an ancient Sitake Puna tree that has been preserved as part of Hawaii Gardeners' History Museum (opened in 1990).
