The navy was first sent to the Hawaiian Islands in 1846 as part of the U.S. military effort in Hawaii during the war with Japan. The islands were a strategic location for Navy SEAL training and it was here that John McCain was born on March 29, 1946. Naval personnel who served inHawaii during World War II include Admiral Chester Nimitz, Commander-in-Chief Pacific Fleet; Rear Admiral Harry Wainwright, Commander Seventh Fleet; Commodore James Licklider, Cruiser Squadron Three; Commodore Salmon P. Chase, Destroyer Squadron Eight; and Vice Admiral Dewey S. King, Third Fleet commandership (1943-1945). In 1959 the navy established its own shipyard on Kauaʻi where they built USS Honolulu (LCS 5) and USS Kwajalein (LPD 9). In 1991 the navy transferred control of Kaua’i Shipbuilding Co., Incorporated to Wahiawa Marine Corporation which continues to build naval vessels today at their yard on Nuʻuanu Avenue in Waikīkī. In 2006 Hawaiian Gardens Municipal Utility District activated a fleet of six Grumman F6F Hellcats donated by McDonnell Douglas Aircraft Company and operated by KHADP as part of Kaena Point Lightkeeper Program. The helicopters provide emergency medical services to residents living near schools and other infrastructure within several miles of Kānea Point National Monument

The community began as a small agricultural town on the edge of Honolulu, Hawaii. In 1907, the owner of a local plantation decided to move his family to Los Angeles so that he could start anew and offer them land in what was then an rural area. He named his new community after himself – Hawaiian Gardens. The plantation continued to be active until 1947 when it was sold to a group of investors who developed it into one of the most prominent areas in Southern California. Hawaii Gardens, California is a small city located in the County of Los Angeles, California. The population was 7,912 at the 2010 census. It lies on the edge of downtown Los Angeles and is bordered by Koreatown to the north and east, Echo Park to the west, and Sherman Oaks to the south. The name "Hawaii Gardens" comes from a place near what is now Chavez Ravine in Pasadena where people were growing pineapple trees for export. The first white settler in Hawaii Gardens was Dr. George Washington Smith who arriving there August 3rd 1853 with his family from Portsmouth NH. He also founded nearby North Hollywood which became one of L A's most heavily populated areas during its early years with cotton mills, theaters and other businesses dotting its landscape along 4th Street between Alameda Avenue and Vine Street In 1857 Kamehameha I moved his court house from Honolulu to Hawaii Gardens after becoming King of Hawai’i under an agreement made with United States President James K Polk pursuant to Article IV of the Treaty of Waitangi ratifying Hawaiian Independence from rule by Great Britain. In 1913 when annexation occurred by the United States as part of World War I (1914-18), General Douglas MacArthur approved plans for Presidio Heights park including land taken up by Pico Boulevard being used as military reserve cemetery for soldiers killed or wounded in action or serving on detached service assignments abroad while their families mourned them back home in Hawai'i Gardeners had long been cultivating palms hereabouts through potters' fields interspersed with coconut gardens until legislation passed May 8th 1911 creating Forest Lawn Cemetery (later Hollywood Forever Cemetery) added 1/3 acre lot adjoining Pico Blvd within minutes after enactment spurred planting haste among local farmers many contributing later still such as Mrs Fenton editorially writing: “I have never seen anything like it anywhere else hereabouts –trees planted densely all around graves plots leaving clear residencies sufficient for flowers but no danger whatsoever of birds nesting therein!” In 1915 construction began on Western Base Annexe housing Army Air Forces personnel stationed at nearby Westbase Station some 2 miles away across 5 lanes of interstate 10 from neighboring Glendale Hills although final closure occurred December 16th 1945 following atomic bombing raids over Japan marking end Of World War II era even though original intent behind installation was defense against possible attack by Japanese forces based adjacent East Coast . Although today few remnants remain extant other than isolated picnic tables atop concrete pedestals surrounded by low shrubbery ..Today only a faint echo remainsof past activity as morning sun peeks over scattered boulders just inside City limits
