Hawaii Gardens, California is a small community located in the Soquel Valley area of Santa Clara County, California. The community has a population of about 105 and was founded in 1903 by sugar growers as a citrus orchard. The name Hawaii Garden may derive from the Hawaiian word kahiwi meaning "garden." The first settlers arrived on the island of Kaua‘i in 1879 and began growing fruit trees. By 1903, the sugar growers had organized their orchards into two companies - East Hawaii Gardens Company and West Hawai‘i Gardens Company. In 1917, East Hawai‘i Gardens company merged with West Hawaii Garden Company to form the current company which still operates today as EastWest Fruit Growers Incorporated The first Hawaiian gardens were built on Kaua‘i between 1919-1921 by Captain John Wainwright for his wife Helen (née Kanahele). Captain Wainwright's gardens were typical of those established later on other islands such as Lanai and Maui where he created landscapes that resembled those found on O`ahu. One of Captain Wainwright's goals was to promote tourism to these islands so that they could be enjoyed by people from all over the world. Captain Wainwright also believed that culture should be developed here instead of left behind on mainland America. He started a school in 1923 called Kahuku School which taught children how to grow tomatoes, sweet potatoes, bananas, etc. while also learning about Hawaiian history and culture. Unfortunately, Kahuku School closed in 1970 but its legacy lives on through continuing educational programs administered by Community College of Hawai'I at Manoa In 1959, when Iolani Palace opened its doors for use as an American military base during World War II it became known as Honolulu Army Airfield No-4 (HAAF-4) which included part of what is now known as Hawaii gardens . After the war ended in 1946 HAAF-4 reverted back to civilian use and was renamed Fort Snelling before being decommissioned in 1955 . In 1957 Fort Snelling became Headquarters for United States Forces Pacific Command (USFPC) stationed at El Centro AFB until its closure in 1971 . In 1969 Fort Snelling reopened as Headquarters for United States Service Forces Europe after being vacated by USFPC at El Centro AFB . Today fort snelling oversees installations throughout USFPC including: RAF MildenhallUK; Funchal Barracks Portugal; Kaiserslautern Naval Base Germany; Rhein Mainz Naval Base Germany; Almelo Air Base Netherlands
