Hawaii Gardens, California is the location of one of the first commercial coffee plantations in the Hawaiian Islands. The plantation was started by Captain David Asa Hill in 1875 and lasted until 1941. In that time, Hawaii Gardens produced over 1 million cups of ground coffee. The first commercial coffee beans were grown on the plantation by Reverend Samuel Nhon and his son, Reverend John Nhon. Reverend Samuel Nhon was also responsible for developing Hawaii Nursery which became one of the largest nurseries in North America. When Captain David Asa Hill retired from his business in 1941, he sold his interest in the plantation to his son-in-law, Rev Nelson Kawananaka. Kawananaka continued to run the plantation until it closed down in 1964. Today, portions of Hawaii Gardens are still used as a research site for coffee trees and bean propagation while other sections are dedicated to hosting public events such as concerts andarity festivals. The remaining land on which the plantation stands has been turned into a nature preserve with hiking trails and picnic areas available for visitors to enjoy.

The first European to visit Hawaii Gardens was Don José de Urquiza, who took note of the beautiful flowers and plants there in 1778. In 1881, Ulysses S. Grant visited Hawaii Gardens and is said to have remarked on its beauty. After annexation by the United States in 1898, many of the traditional Hawaiian cultural practices were outlawed, including growing coffee. However, coffee continued to be grown here until 1971 when it became an official state crop under California Proposition 12
Hawaii Gardens, California is a small city in the San Francisco Bay Area of Northern California. The population was 8,693 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Hayward district of San Francisco. The gardens were started by noted horticulturist and explorer Captain James Cook in 1795 as part of his effort to map and name all the new land he had discovered while on his way back from Polynesia. Cook named them "Hawaiana" after Hawai'i, but they are now known simply as Hawaiian Gardens. The first visitor to Hawaiian Gardens was General José Castro who arrived January 6th, 1821 with Lt. Colonel John Sloat during Napa County's revolt against Mexico which began two weeks earlier. He brought plants and animals with him from Cuba and upon his arrival created an orchard that still stands today including a number of rare palms and ferns. On December 12th, 1872 Major General David Ewing arrived at Hawaiian Gardens with 1,200 troops under command to take possession of what would become Alameda County following its incorporation into California as part of Proposition 4 (1868). On March 14th 1865 Captain James Cook's body was found along Santa Clara River east of what is now downtown Hayward after being lost overboard during his final voyage around Earth on HMS Endeavour when en route to Tahiti (then called Tonga). His remains were interred at Honolulu Cemetery where a plaque still reads: "James Cook - Botanist & Explorer - Buried here November 25th 1795". The original building that housed the garden became home to several schools before it burned down in 1906. The current building was completed in 1909 and contains a botanical garden, art galleries, restaurants, retail shops and parking lot for over 100 cars. In 1920 Japanese Americans were relocated from their former concentration camps near Oakland into valleys near Alameda Creek where they built four large homes known as Hawaii Estates—the largest being 5 acres (2 hectares). These areas also served as agricultural plantations until World War II when they reverted back to Japanese American status as housing developments once again resumed outsideOakland limits but this time within city limits since most residents living there had moved out by then...In 1945 local developer Minoru Suzuki bought one acre (0.4 hectare) adjacent to Hawaii Estates for use as an open-air shopping mall...In 1951 he subdivided this plot into 50 tracts which formed what is now Hawaiian Gardens City Council District 2...This area became annexed by Hayward in 1984." It wasn't until 1959 when park Superintendent Earl Kilbourne designed the present day visitors center which includes a gift shop/garden store and playground located on top of an old munitions dumpsters which has been used for golf tournaments ever since! Today it houses both the Hawaii Garden Showcase Museum (in English) showcasing items related to Hanauma Valley culture including traditional crafts such as weaving baskets using pandanus leaves and making ukuleles from coconut fiber),and Tiki Room(in Hawaiian), displaying tiki torches made from animal hide
