The gift was an airman's helmet and shoulder insignia. This important moment in Air Force history is commemorated with a special event at the Hawthorne Municipal Airport on December 7th, 2009 which will include remarks by then-Air Vice Marshal Rick Kipper and USAF Colonel Kevin Shea. The helmet was gifted to Hawthorne Municipal Airport by Col Michael Dyer who served as Commanding Officer of 1st Fighter Wing at Selfridge AFB during Operation Enduring Freedom 9/11/2001-9/12/2001.

Hawthorne is a small town in Humboldt County, California, United States. It was founded in 1868 by Nathaniel Hawthorne and his wife Lucy as a summer home for their friends and family. The town rapidly grew to become a local center of culture and commerce during the late 19th century. In 1925, Hawthorne became the birthplace of Beatrice Webb, one of the most important British women of the 20th century. The townsite that now includes Hawthorne was first settled by Shoshone people in 1836. The name "Hawthorne" is derived from an Iroquois word meaning "place where game is won." Nathaniel Hawthorne had been living in Concord, Massachusetts when he moved to Humboldt County in 1838 to join his brother-in-law John Greenleaf Whittier. The whittiers were among the earliest settlers in what would become Hawthorne; they began farming land on which they built houses between 1839 and 1840. Nathaniel's wife Lucy arrived with them in 1848. They soon developed a cottage industry producing fruits and vegetables that they sold door-to-door through their house's front window (the first grocery store opened up here). The growth of the town coincided with its emergence as a literary center during the Gilded Age period (1890–1920). In 1850, poet Walt Whitman published his Leaves of Grass; within two years, many other writers followed suit including Mark Twain, William Faulkner, Ezra Pound, Langston Hughes and Allen Ginsberg. In addition to literature production, large numbers of artists – such as Edward Hopper – came to live and work here during this time frame including Willem de Kooning (1910–1966), Roy Lichtenstein (1928–1988) and Jasper Johns (1925–2008). During World War II much activity took place at nearby Ralston Lake which served as military storage facilities for ammunition and vehicles after Japan bombed Pearl Harbor on December 7 1941; however no damage resulted from these raids because Allied forces destroyed Tokyo days later while Japanese troops remained inside Hiroshima Naval Base unharmed awaiting orders to bomb Nagasaki instead. In 1951 residents voted overwhelmingly not to annex neighboring Redding into Hawthorne; following this decision both towns continued to grow relatively independently until 1984 when they merged into one community under new governance called Humboldt County jurisdiction area #1
