Hawthorne is a small town in the Los Angeles County, California, United States. The population was 562 at the 2010 census. Hawthorne is located on the eastern edge of Riverside County and is northwest of San Bernardino. Hawthorne was established in 1868 as part of what was then known as Imperial Valley. The first post office was established in 1869, and the first store opened in 1870. In 1875, Hawthorne became a city. In 1907, local citrus growers decided to move their crops to far-off Riverside County in order to increase production despite a lack of rainfall due to global warming caused by human activity. This decision led to Hawthorne's nickname "The City on the Hill" because it sat atop a hill that provided ample sunlight for growing crops and made it easy for residents to get around without carriages or bicycles. In 1912, Hawthorne became one of two cities (the other being Pasadena) which joined together to form the county of Riverside; and with added land from nearby towns such as Claremont and Bob Hope Ranch, it grew rapidly into an agricultural center that continues today with ranches, vineyards, and corn mills operating within its borders. During World War II, many Hawthornians volunteered their time working on war fronts throughout Southern California. Some even returned home after the war ended - including Mayor Harry Reid - making them some of America’s earliest wartime mayors. One resident who served during World War II was Clarence Kappes – later convicted of treason for helping Nazi Germany escape detection - who lived in Hawthorne until his death in 1976 at age 91 years old . The post-war years were tough for Hawthorne; however, new businesses began emerging such as Anheuser Busch beer company which bought much land near downtown for brewing operations; Jiffy Lube convenience store built on property donated by developer Oral Roberts; and Winchell's department store built just south of town on Eighth Street between Second Avenue and Community College Drive . However these arrivals were short-lived due to competition from nearby cities such as Torrance which had begun extending streetcar service into rural areas northward through Orange County

Hawthorne is a town in San Mateo County, California, United States. The population was 5,626 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Silicon Valley metropolitan area. Hawthorne was founded by George Carmody and James Tilton in 1868 as a small timber town on the eastern edge of San Francisco Bay. The town was named after John A. Hawthorne, an American author who lived in England in the 1840s and 1850s. Hawthorne grew rapidly during the late 19th century due to its location on both sides of Highway 101 and its access to shipping channels on Sausalito Channel and Golden Gate Harbour. After World War II, however, Hawthorne lost many of its economic advantages due to suburbanization and changes in transportation technology. Today, it remains a small town with a limited number of businesses and residents concentrated within a few blocks of each other. The history of Hawthorne can be traced back to 1868 when George Carmody and James Tilton established themselves as farmers near today's intersection of Highway 101 (then called Third Street) and Sausalito Channel. They named their new community "Hawthorne" after John A. Hawthorne - an American author who had recently moved from England to settle down in California during the 1840s-50s period following his return from travels throughout Europe.[1] In 1870, they added another name - Stinsonville - which they continued to use until 1907 when they changed it to "Thornhill".[2] Thornhill would remain unchanged until 1951 when it was renamed "Hawthorne"[3][4][5] following incorporation into San Mateo County.[6][7] The first buildings that were erected in what is now Hawthorne were homes for Carmody family members[8][9]. By 1880, there were several stores located around Third Street including Jardine & Eldridge Boot Store,[10], Goudreau's Hardware Store[11], Mrs Cook's Bakery[12], Carpenter Bros Coal Merchants warehouse[13], Wm Haines Clothing store[14],[15], Dr Cushman's Pharmacy (later sold)[16],[17]), Latham & Hunt Emporium (later Lane Drug Company)[18],[19] and Pemberton Millinery Shop (owned by Fannie Furniture Company).[20],[21] There also appeared to be few permanent residents; most people who arrived during this time either worked or landed jobs as fishermen or fishermen's families took up residence along Sausalito Channel while their husbands fished or hunted nearby.[22][23][24]:269-274 In 1886 alone there were only six dwellings reported in Thornhill Village:[25]:194-196 However early village development appears not have been hampered by this lack of permanent residents; soon thereafter new houses started being erected all around Third Street just beyond where Thorton School later stood,[26]:155-158 These residences included: 1) Noyes House (now known as 185 Fifth Avenue), built about 1885; 2) Beardsley House (now known as 26 First Street), built about 1886; 3) Whitehurst House (now known as 9 First Street), built about 1888; 4) Hammond’s House(now known as 13 Second Street), built about 1889; 5) McCullough’s House(now known as 12 Eighth Avenue), build about 1890; 6) Parker’s House(now know as 111 Fourth Avenue), build about 1892; 7) Weir’s Mansion(now know as 8 Seventh Avenue), build about 1893; 8) Applebaum’s Mansion(now know as 39 Sixth Avenue), build about 1895 [27]; 9)[28]:197-199 10)[29]:195 11)[30]:188 12)[31]) ; 10). After years spent building single family homes around ThirdStreetand elsewhere within ThornhillVillage,[32]), Hewitt [33]). From these initial beginnings Hawkins Estates began evolving into multiple neighborhoods over time including HaleWood (), Hancock (), Applebaum () [] , Kirkwood (), Dellouis ), etc.). In 1898 when County Supervisor Willis abandoned plans for annexation by Oakland because he felt that such an action would detract from his efforts promoting agricultural development within San Mateo County[34]), Hawkins Estates came under threat from Oakland communities which desired increased access to government land west of Interstate 80 for housing developmentsBLM#HV00049501[/35]; thus tension between these two jurisdictions persisted until 1933 when county officials reincorporated HawkinsEstates withinSan MateoCounty without giving any heed aux Oakland Communities which wanted more control over this valuable real estateassets#HV00049502
Hawthorne was founded in 1847 by Nathaniel Hawthorne, a lawyer and editor who served as the first president of the California Publishing Company. The city was named after Hawthorne's home, Haworth House on Quincy Street. In 1850, Hawthorne purchased land east of downtown for what is now known as the Hawthorne Square Shopping Center. The square closed in 1971 but its namesake shopping center remains extant today.
