The history of the Hawthorne Army Depot began in 1892 when the California Territorial Legislature designated Hawthorne a military depot. The Hawthorne Depot was founded on October 15, 1892 as a small Arsenal and Ammunition store, located at 12th and Farnsworth Streets in Hawthorne. In 1896, the depot was renamed the Army Depot after it became an armory for the 9th Infantry Regiment stationed in Hawthorne. In 1933, all of the ammunition stores within the Barker-Hawthorne munitions district were transferred to Fort Ord and closed down. However, part of Barker-Hawthorne munitions district (including The Army Depot) reopened as a gunpowder storage facility under army jurisdiction in 1934 administered by Commander-in-Chief Western United States Command. Today, The Army Depot continues to serve as Fort Ord's primary ammunition storage area for firearms and ordnance products used by both the US military and civilians throughout California.
