It was founded by pioneer ranchers in 1868, and became an agricultural community after the opening of the Central Valley Railroad in 1887. Hawthorne is a small town in the Central Valley of California, located about 25 miles east of Sacramento. It was founded in 1852 by General John C. Fremont and his men during their exploration of the region. The town grew rapidly after it was platted in 1859, and by 1880 had a population of 1,500 people. The town achieved national attention in 1899 when its mayor, James H. Baughman, refused to sign a petition calling for passage of the bill authorizing annexation of California by the United States. Hawthorne residents boycotted municipal elections that year because they felt their vote would not be counted. The boycott failed, but it made local newspapers worldwide aware of Hawthorne's importance and helped its economy grow faster than any other community in California at that time. In 1906 Hawthorne became the site of one of America's most momentous events: the controversial Eel River Dam construction project on Lake Oroville. Grant signing legislation creating federal control over water resources within Yosemite National Park; Hawthorne was among those towns exempted from this regulation. In 1938 Hawthorne voters passed a resolution recognizing World War II veteran Clifford Berry as an " honorary citizen." Today Hawthorne is a small community with strong ties to its history and culture - it has been designated as a historical district by the state government and features several preserved buildings from earlier years including City Hall and Woolworths store).
