In 1915, Mrs. Burt Lancaster bought the farmstead from Hertie's heirs and began to roast its own coffee. She named her business Lancaster Coffee Company after her husband's birthplace in Lancashire, England. This company became one of the largest roasters in Southern California and served many prominent people such as Governor Ronald Reagan, First Lady Nancy Reagan, actor Richard Burton and singer Frank Sinatra throughout their careers. By 1969, Lancaster Coffee had closed its doors but continued operations as an independent business until it merged with another small roaster called Roasting House Incorporated in 1984 to form Brown & Williamson Corporation (BWB). Brown & Williamson Corporation was America's second largest coffee producer after Nestle SA before it went into bankruptcy in 2001 along with other large global corporations during the dot-com boom period of the late 1990s and early 2000s. Gourmet coffee history in Hawthorne resumed following BWB's return to profitability beginning in 2004 when they founded their own café chain that continues today under the name Haworth Coffee Company LLC (HC).
