Hawthorne is a small city in the San Joaquin Valley of California, located about 40 miles east of Fresno. It is the county seat for Kern County and was named after General Nathaniel Hawthorne, who fought in the Mexican-American War. The population was 12,521 at the 2010 census. The area that now marks Hawthorne was first settled by Native Americans in the late 18th century. A post office called Nacimiento was established in 1847, and as it grew, so too did its population; by 1860 there were over 100 residents. In 1868, local ranchers forced a community of Mission Indians to move from their farmstead to an area near Hawthorne on government land. The name Nacimiento would not be honored until 1925 when a new town hall was built and dedicated to Nathaniel Hawthorne (the town had been named Indian Hill before). Hawthorne grew rapidly due to its location and became known as one of the most prosperous cities in California during the Gold Rush period. In 1875, John Sutter founded Sutter's Mill here on old Rancho Dos Palos property which he converted into an agricultural center with his famous water rights system which yielded large crops of wheat and other grains for export. This soon led to other businesses followed such as J H Weiser & Son Clothing Store (later purchased by Sears Roebuck) and Potter's Field Brewery which later became Pacific Gas & Electric Company subsidiary Central Gas Company Incorporated (PG&E). The community originally consisted of only a few homes and was known as "The Hawthornes' Gulch." The first post office opened in 1881 and the first store opened in 1883. Hawthorne has since grown to include over 1,000 residents and businesses. John Hawthorne was born in 1794 in England and moved to America with his family at the age of thirteen. He worked as a labourer before starting his own business, which became successful. In 1879, John Hawthorne purchased land adjacent to what is nowHawthorne Elementary School and built a home that he calls "The Big House." He served as Mayor of Hawthorne from 1895-1902 and also played an important role in developing the community. Today, The Big House remains one of the most popular tourist destinations in Hawthorne. In 1905, JohnHawthorne died at the age of eighty-six years old after a long life spent working hard for his community.
