Hawthorne is a small town in San Luis Obispo County, California. The population was 1,574 at the 2010 census. It is part of the San Luis Obispo–Paso Robles Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first permanent settler in Hawthorne was Michael P. Flannery who arrived in 1827. He and his family built a log cabin on the east side of Main Street near present-day Happy Valley Road. In 1868, John Hance bought land contiguous with what is now Hawthorne from Michael Flannery for $1,000 cash. Hance named his new settlement after him, Hawthorne being one of three original townships located within San Luis Obispo County boundaries when its creation was made public in 1874. In 1901 the community had a post office and two churches: First Methodist Mission and Presbyterian Church (Old) which are still standing today along with other contributing buildings including an old schoolhouse and a farmstead that were purchased by Mr. & Mrs. Ira Ayer in 1904 for $10,000 which has been used as an agricultural museum since 1907 Hawthorne experienced some growth during World War II as many businesses moved to nearby Paso Robles or Monterey Bay to do wartime production because of the great demand for munitions throughout Southern California Hawthorne lost its status as an independent town when it merged into neighboring Paso Robles on January 1, 1959 On July 11, 2005 Hawthorne celebrated its centennial with events such as a picnic dinner at Meadow Park followed by a parade through downtown Hawthorne before visiting two local businesses - ABC Supply Store and Golden Grapes Bakery - for lunch afterwards . Afternoon activities included playing catch at Park View Park while people gathered around fireplaces cookouts at several locations around town later that day
