Hawthorne is a small town in the Santa Clara County, California, region. It was founded on Valentine's Day in 1848 by John Sutter and his brother-in-law George Washington Smith. The population at the 2010 census was 2,814. The first national guard unit to be stationed in Hawthorne was Company A of the 1st Battalion of Sacramento City Volunteers (later the 1st National Guard Regiment), which arrived on October 16, 1851. The regiment served until it disbanded on February 23, 1865. In 1902, Hawthorne voters passed an ordinance establishing a municipal police department with jurisdiction over all aspects of local policing including the national guard. On November 5 that year, Hawthorne's first city councilman and Mayor Willard Haught presented Mayor Burton with a gift from then-Governor Hiram Johnson: two rifles and three pistols for use by the national guard as part of their law enforcement duties within Hawthorne municipality limits. In 1911–12, Hawthorne established its own fire department through donation from Mrs. Mabel Loy Hansen. In 1916–17, donations totaling $2,000 were made to establish a second battalion of the Sacramento City Volunteer Rifles (later called 2nd Battalion/5th Regiment) to serve as a reserve unit should anyONE or more units become unavailable for combat service due to World War I mobilization efforts or other reasons; this battalion never materialized however because only one man serving in it died during World War I while serving with another Illinois army unit - thus no company ever became operational under these donation plans themselves!

In 1851 Nathaniel Hawthorne married Lucy Fenton and they began farming land around their home until 1865 when they moved to San Francisco due to Lucy's health problems. They returned to Hawthorne in 1876 and operated a farm until their death in 1925. They are buried at Oakwood Cemetery in nearby Menlo Park. On September 23, 1850 California became a state with no Black Belt sections; this led to African Americans starting businesses throughout California including one near present day Stanford University which was called "Hawthorne House" (). In 1895 Samuel Morse constructed his first telephone line from San Francisco into Oakland through a small piece of farmland east of downtown that he had rented from John Douden: This proto-cellular telephone service helped spur further development of early telecommunications infrastructure throughout Northern California
